I am just curious what some of you do to clear up old vs newer part numbers.
THIS recent "for sale" listing had me look up correct trim rings for my car;
The listing was for a #475020 part number; The listing said that this was for a 14x7" wheel, and mentioned that this number replaced #3934892
So I pulled up my 'go-to' MPC (I have a couple, this was the first one I bought, and I am a creature of habit) which is dated November 1974 (so it's an early 1975 model year catalogue.
The correct part number for my car would be a #9796919
How would any of you go about looking up replacement part numbers for this trim ring? (because I am honestly curious if this (recently sold) ring is a correct one for my car)

The #475020(3934892)is for the corvette style rally rims-the 69 camaro pace car had the 14X7 rally rims were 2 1/2" deep and various other cars-70 chevelles(not ss)etc
had them-
Trim Rings #9796919 are also for 14X7 same part number since early 70's but are nearly 3" deep and are correct for ss rims as well as other Pontiac /Olds rims-I have a NOS set of #9796919 in GM boxes but not for sale at this time

Am I right in remembering that at one point the part number changed on the trim rings (but maybe not these exact ones) because they changed the attaching style? 4 clips vs clips all the way around?

I am aware of some parts, and their number-flopping but this one got me thinking.

I am aware of some parts, and their number-flopping but this one got me thinking.
If I remember right (big IF), when GM changed a supplier for a certain part they would change the part #. They would use the superseded # till all the OLD parts were gone, then delete that number.
Carl was a parts guy and might have more insight...
Most factory trim rings were 4 clips like Carl stated then most went to a 16 teeth serrated design.Jonny I will send you a pm as I have some original 4 clip as well as some nice used later design ones-sure I can help you out!
