1967 Windshield washer repair

I have a friend's car here and it needed the windshield washer pump repaired. The original had failed so someone just bought one of those "nice" universal 12 volt washer pumps and fastened it to the inner fender with Robertson head screws, as well as wired it in using those Scotchlok connectors which I banned from my garage years ago!

My task was to make it look as original as possible again and make the washers work. I forgot to take pictures of that nasty fender mounted pump and the wiring mess that was part of the conversion but here's how it looked once I snipped the wires and removed all the hoses with their many hose connectors.

I removed the existing stock GM pump that mounts on the wiper motor. Very simple, 2 screws and one 2 prong wiring connector.  That leaves you with the 4 tab sprocket. The original is metal, it is shown in this picture already removed, lying on the white rag. The Parts Master washer pump I installed, which looks very much like the original but not identical, required removing the steel sprocket and installing the plastic one. As shown I had to use an 18" prybar behind the steel sprocket (mocked up in the pic, I'm not removing the plastic gear, just showing how I removed the steel sprocket. I had to pull HARD on the bar and the sprocket shot a long way across the garage when it came off!

The new gear took some pretty good convincing to press on. A socket on an extension and some good firm taps with a hammer got it on but it took a bit.

Nest up was installing the new pump and pump frame assembly. 2 small bolts hold it on. The small bolt shown at the end of the screwdriver had an issue. It wouldn't sit flat due to the washer behind the head interfering with the black plastic pump housing, so I had to shave the washer down a little with the bench grinder.

Once I did that I could screw it down.

Hooked up some hoses, plugged in the wiring and tested.

Yee-haw, we have juice again!

For some reason these GM windshield washers have always been intimidating for me but this was actually not a bad job.

Once I tidied everything up and replaced the broken plastic firewall gutter at the same time, it all looks pretty original again.

And yes, I know the master cylinder and the ignition coil need attention! One thing at at time...

Very timely post Carl, I bought an NOS wiper and motor for the 65 and the pump is no good. Can you explain why a 1 speed and 2 speed wiper motor needs a different pump? I am finding lots of one speed pumps but no 2 speed ones

I thought the 1 speed wipers didn't have washers? I must have been wrong in thinking that.

Hmm I see in the parts book  the one speed wipers did have washers. I don't think I have a 65 service manual any more to check in there...

I don't see the mock-up photo of the 18" prybar
