I almost bought this car in 1990

It was an unrestored Arizona car and IIRC it was something like $2500. Same seller had an Arizona 66 Mustang for sale that needed less work so I bought it instead. The reason I know this is the car is the back story and the fact it was a 340/4 speed Western Sport Special (it was original paint at the time) with the same rear end! Whoever restored it should have kept it stock. I had no idea it was one of one..

1970 Dodge Challenger Western Sport 340/4-Speed 1 Of 1 $99970

Have a look at this extremely rare 1970 Dodge Challenger Western Sport Special. It is powered by the original numbers matching 340-cubic inch engine and 4-speed transmission. It has 8 3/4 rear end with 3:23 gears and Sure Grip. This Dodge Challenger has been documented by Galen Govier and is the only documented one with these options. The Western Sport Special was limited to only low performance slant 6, 318 or 383 2-BBL engines and was not supposed to have a 340 engine with 4BBL carb as an engine option. This Challenger was built in the Los Angeles plant as were all the WSS cars. It was sold new in Arizona and is rust-free and still retains all its original panels and sheet metal! The car was last plated in Arizona in 1977 and has been in Canada for over 40 years but never plated. This car is in excellent condition inside and out. The chrome, trim, interior, fit and finish are excellent. The only deviation from the original options was many years ago the colour was changed from FY4 Light Gold Metallic to the white it is now and the interior from white and black to the current white and red. The Challenger runs and drives excellent and sounds awesome. See the pictures and video then you should come see this beautiful Challenger in person. Comes with current insurance appraisal. Trade up or down on other muscle cars/trucks or late model 4X4 trucks. Delivery or shipping can be arranged  for Canada, the USA and beyond. **FREE WINTER STORAGE WITH PURCHASE**

I have never heard of a Western Sport Challenger, although I know Dodge did Swinger 340s for 1971 & 2 as special runs for Western Canada dealers.

A regional thing, much like a California Special. What did the package consist of?

It was a discounted trim package promotion. According to Google: Option code A91 denoted the Western Sport Special package, which cost $199.50 and was only offered for the 1970 model year. The package was released in mid December 1969 to the Los Angeles and San Francisco regions and each car was built at the Los Angeles production plant.

Nice one, reminds me of the Hang 10 Dart option.

I'm pretty sure it was imported properly as the same guy brought the 66 Mustang back to Ontario at the same time as the Challenger. I had an Ontario ownership for the Mustang.
Here's some photos of the Mustang:

I cleaned that frame with Windex lol and these factory numbers where written on the frame rails.

I rented a space to work on it and started tearing it down. My66Mustang.jpg
Then got married, bought a house yadda yadda yadda. I did track it down a year ago. I had sold it to a co worker at CAMI and he had it until just a few years ago.

It must have been a tough choice, Todd, as they are both nice cars.  The colour combo with the Pony interior on the Mustang is quite striking.  The Challenger would be cool as well, especially as it was a 340 car.  I agree that the owner should have kept the original colour.

It does seem odd, though, that the Challenger has gone through a full restoration yet has never been plated in Canada after 40 years.  Why would somebody do that?  Did they not want to drive it?

I wonder if the car sat unrestored for a number of years and only recently got refurbished? I do recall one main reason I didn't buy it is the interior was cooked and needed everything replaced. It was an original paint car however and still had the Western Sport decals on it.

I remember seeing back in the 60's in Hamilton, and later in Ancaster when he moved there, a '66 Mustang GT convertible that belonged to one Dr. Balfour. It had the same interior as that coupe you posted, aqua & white. It had a shortened console. Get this, the car was a genuine GT convertible with a factory 289 Hi-po, Cruisomatic, factor a/c (almost nobody bought that in Canada in the 60s), styled steel wheels (rare before repros came along), trumpet exhaust tips, factory tint, white with white top, black rocker striping, and the GT grille was removed when new, leaving a deep mesh in which he installed large Lucas driving lights. They were still on the car when I saw it in the 90s but were eventually replaced with the stock stuff. It was still rolling on redline tires in '77. Repros hadn't come along yet.

In the early 90s I seriously considered a '66 Mustang coupe that my friend brought back from Texas. It was factory black inside & out, had a 200 3-speed manual with factory a/c, an odd pairing. It was amazingly solid and still had the cast Waco, TX dealer emblem on the back, matching the bill of sale. The dealer was in Waco, Texas and this was right around the time the Branch Davidian was making the news with the siege in Waco. I didn't want to sell the Chevelle so I passed.

I know this is a Canadian Pontiac site, so I have to fess up. I have always wanted a '68 Pontiac 2+2 fastback. Even back in the 60's. There were so many nice big Pontiacs made during the 60's that it is hard to pick a favourite. Something with 300 horses or more with a 4-speed or Hydramatic becomes more so. Usually they were 283 Powerglides though, but that can be remedied.
