Strange hole in the 1969 Pontiac.

Sorry no pics of the sedan.

Bodyshop called me today about the 1/4-inch stamped hole in the trunk opening on right cowl panel, near the 1/4 panel.

He says it's clearly stamped and not drilled.

I have found the same hole in the convertible but it's been puttied over.

Did they forget the factory putty on the car or was there a rubber bumper there like the ones on the deck lid ?

If it is in the channel then it suggests those could be anchor points for weatherstripping. Tough to say without pics.

I may have a chance to be around unrestored 1969 Pontiac today.

I will see if I can get a shot of the same area

 Here lies the problem,

The inner panel that houses the deck lid torsion bars had to be fixed because of water damage.

The body shop had no choice to tear this apart, blast and replace the damage.

My guess is that the trunk rotted from inside out.

Whatever it is, any way you look at it, its a drain for water to enter the trunk and needs to be welded shut. My car, albeit a convertible, has 2 spot welds in that vicinity.

Mike, if you get a chance, snap a picture of this area.

This car is an October 1968 car.

Thanks !

How low is the VIN Randy? Wouldn't you crap it if was a pilot build or even an early body eventually shipped for production?

October would be too late for a pilot don't you think? More like August at the latest? Weren't the new models in the showrooms in September?

I dunno. When I worked at CAMI we had complete white bodies on stands that were used in case a body got damaged on the welding line. Some of them sat for weeks before the need arose to use it. I recall a white body getting damaged during a "football" game (the line was down) when a big fella running for the ball (made of gloves) accidently ran into the side of it. It had to be scrapped.....

For reference, do you need to go any further than your own convertible that has the same hole, but puttied over?

That said, it is a curiosity and it would be cool to know why it's there.

Dont get a chance to buy back your old car for a resonable price. Minor changes can be undone. Could be home in one day.

I didn't get the chance to look yesterday.

Yesterday was all about helping a friend.

Yes, it's driving me nuts.
