348 cid

Well, I was able to get 2-348cid engines from a couple of old cars last weekend. The old fella that let me have them pulled them out and scrapped the cars. There was nothing left of them anyway but I wanted to get a couple pics of them in the cars. Oh well. One was in a 59 Pontiac convertible, and the other was in what I think was a 60 Pontiac. the one in the 60 looks like someone swapped in a truck engine. I havent look at numbers yet. Just cool to have them, even as conversation pieces.

As for the 67 SD its officially on the back burner, and the 67 Chevelle is jumping the line. I have purchased a full floor pan and trunk pan for the Beaumont so far though, so it will be done. With the Chevelle I just finished replacing the trunk pan, drop offs, inner & outer wheel wells, drivers quarter, deck filler, and lower windshield channel. Floor pans arrived Friday so I can repair the areas with pinholes. Have all new bright work for the exterior except bumpers, all new poly bushings, steering component, 2 dropped springs, and QA1 shocks.
67 396 is on an engine cart and will be rebuilt when the time comes. Ill pick up necessary items for it so that when it comes time Im not waiting on parts. Ill keep people posted as I go.

cheers

jamie

ps. I cant fix the sideways pics ffs

I find it interesting that the 348 on the stand has a pcv valve. It would be interesting to know what it was originally installed in.

Yeah, I think both were transplants from other vehicles. Can only guess if the cars came with 348s originally

If there is a stamped code on the block you could look it up in the lime book.

After being replaced by the 327 in passenger cars for 1962, the 348 continued as a medium duty truck engine through 1965. Road draft tubes disappeared after 1962 (with a few exception) so an open PCV 348 could be a production 1963-65 348 truck engine.

As prefectca said, the Lime Book will help i.d.  the original application.

3755011, 1958 truck, or 59-61 car. Cant read date code, looks like 58 but cant see month. Ive seen the pcv on a 62 cdn 283, may have been optional 62 and before, it was stock in 63 up.

I was reading about pcv systems. In California pcv was mandated in 1961. In some areas in California that had bad smog problems it could have been mandated as early as 1957 and many older vehicles were retrofitted also. The engine with the pcv system may have been equipped for California emissions.

Re: emissions. Here's a neat piece I held onto ever since we got it in the mail in 1970. It was about the emissions systems in use to date. I remember seeing a large poster version of it on the wall in the service dept. at Wills Motors, Caledonia.

We received the above in a mailer in 1970 but it may have pertained to 1971 models, when the vapour recovery system came into federal use.
