I am visiting my brother in law in Wakefield PQ and my daughter and grandkids in Ottawa. I was helping the brother in law move and came out with this sweater, a family heirloom. His father went to a university in PEI, St Dunstans, from 1936-1939. Its now UPEI and his Dad was a goalie.
He became a pilot in the RCAF and after the war worked ferrying aircraft. He was stationed in Estevan in 1946 and they were ferrying aircraft back to the USA, those which were part of the British American lend lease program. On a flight back from the USA, the plane crashed and 21 pilots and 1 ground crew died in the crash. My brother in law was 3 1/2, his father 28. I never heard the details of the story before but they were all WW 2 pilots I believe. They wrote a book about the crash and a picture of the family is in the book.

There were so many stories relating to WWII & that generation. It really was a great, selfless generation.
Dad enlisted when he was 18 in 1940, as did the majority of his generation.
We owe a debt of gratitude to that generation. We scarcely know we are alive, compared to what they were forced to face. When we hear about stuff like the massacre at Ecole Polytechnique, it pales by comparison when considering that the equivalent was going on all the time during WWII under the guise of war. Seriously. I have mom's old highschool yearbook in which she showed me all the guys that were lost during WWII.
As for that heirloom sweater, impossible to put a price on. So much is attached to it. It is so cool that it remains as an emblem to another time & world, really.
I can remember finding a yellow & black Tiger Town t-shirt from the 1950s that was vintage Hamilton Tiger Cat swag. It was really cool, but then it ran like crazy when it went in the wash.
