Cruising the strip in Toronto in 1964.

Cruising the strip in Toronto in 1964........
Saw an ad in Hemmings recently for a 63 1/2 427 Galaxie......brought back this memory
so I posted it there......:clap.

It's spring 1964 in Toronto and some buddies and I are cruising Yonge St. the main drag in Toronto where all the hot cars cruised up and down on a Saturday night. Several dealerships on the strip had some high performance machines sitting on their used car lots and we had to stop in to check them out. Piggott Ford in Willowdale (North Toronto) had a white 63 1/2 Galaxie 427 4 speed hidden in the second line. We gathered around examining it and even popped the hood to see two huge Holleys - I got in behind the wheel. Remembering there was a Ford key on my ring for my Dad's 64 Fairliane - I decided to try it.
Nice fit - pump twice- - turn - crank - start. The 427 fired up and sounded like a thunder storm was about to descend. For a minute I thought 'joy ride' but cooler thoughts prevailed and I shut her down. I still dream about that car tho, we were all Chevy fans and no one went back on Monday to see what the price was. The same group would go on to buy all the new Chevy offerings for several years but never even mentioned our chance at running Yonge St in a (albeit borrowed) 63 1/2 427 Galaxie 4 speed.
Gorgeous car, white with red interior.
keep your motor runnin'

There was a red 64 Galaxie 500 XL with a 427 dual quad that was often seen back in the day on Victoria Park at the Supertest station. The car still exists & belongs to his son, fully restored.

I remember driving with my dad early one Sunday morning on the backroads near Nanticoke, as he had some land use study to perform. I remember out in the middle of nowhere, loads of fresh, wide rubber strips along the road. Obviously there had been some unsanctioned grudge matches a few hours before. No carnage this time, but another time we were heading out to Dunnville when we passed a '67 Mustang fastback on it's roof with nobody around.

I think that most towns & cities had a strip that people would cruise. I don't really remember it distinctly in Hamilton but I do recall Brantford having a regular loop downtown. I remember a bright yellow Olds Rallye 350 in the latter 70s that used to cruise that loop. In Hamilton I do remember out cruising, a heavily chromed and customized '66 Mustang GT coupe powered by a 289 HiPo with completely chromed undercarriage (remember when chrome was affordable?), red metalflake paint with Kenny Kay murals on the hood and trunk lid. That was kind of a local thing in the 1970s. Ah, Kenny Kay. That could be a thread unto itself...

You mean this one - George's Ford......I lived in the apartment one block south and used to visit George.

They used to laugh at me cause I was drivin' a 63 Vette that wasn't quite as fast as his Ford.......no.

Great memories, I worked at that Supertest station pumping gas as one of my after school jobs. I drove a new 64 Pontiac CS 409 425. George and I never raced against each other, but a few street races out of the Harveys where against similar cars. My 409 never lost.

I worked there from 1963 till late 1964. My parents house was on Hexham Dr. off of Surrey. I also worked at the Fina on Lawrence through 1964 to 1965. Tom was the owner there. When I blew the rear end I replaced it at the Fina station. Great times.

the owner of the Rallee' 350 was the president of the Oldsmobile Club of America (Canadian division) Spoke to him several times when the meets were held in London. He was the original owner. He said the Brantford dealer sold 2 or 3 Rallee's

Had to look up the Rallye 350, was surprised to see it is my current calendar car in the garage. Its from 2006, but the days are the same days of the week as 2023.

I remember seeing one at the London cruise nights back in the 80's and early 90's

I had one !!!! Super fast car with His N Hers shifter. Came from the factory with a shift kit in it. A buddy of mine set up the tranny about a year after I bought it, I have no idea what he did then, I'm thinking he adjusted the modulator valve, but it was noticeably faster after that.
Wish I had that one back, traded it for my first Vette
