What is this "X" in the VIN?

I was looking at a picture of a 65 Canadian Pontiac on Marketplace (owned by a member here) and I noticed the VIN tag. Anyone seen others with the "X" like this one? I can't imagine what it's there for.

What is this

Dealers were supposed to stamp the Delivery Date (hence D. D.) on the v.i.n. tag but it was virtually never done.

Looks like a '65 Strato Chief 6-cyl 4-door.

Yes I'm familiar with the delivery date but no ideas for the X?

Maybe a stamp designating that a recall has been performed?

This is a very logical answer.

We did this at St Thomas, when the cars were held in the yard for a repair or a check on an assembly issue.

One weekend, I was part of a team replacing hood springs as they were too weak and the hood wood did not stay open.

One guy's job was to check our work and mark the cars, after that repair was done.

The car shipping team was to double check for this mark, before the cars were loaded onto the trains.

I asked VVS these questions  about VIN detail GM Canada D.D.

What does D.D. signify on the VIN Tag?

There are rumours that DD stands for Delivery Date.

That dealers were supposed to punch or scratch in the Delivery Date on VIN.

In the 60's GM sent out a (POP) Protect O Plate to track warranty work.

Since it is illegal to mess with a VIN in any country,

Why would GM Canada suggest this since other manufacturers did not request this questionable practice?

VVS reply to above: no idea, they would not have stamped anything after the original VIN number was stamped, and nothing like dymo tape would last there, so just one of the mysteries of our century, sorry

D.D. was actually Delivery Date, WHY? * see details on update below

As for the X, anyone in the last 50+ years made this mark for whatever unknown reason.

As for Rework check, Caulk on glass is the normal non destructive method communicating & confirming Deficiency completed.

I'd suggest that sort of "x" is a mistake or inadvertence or something leaned up on the plate, in other words - nothing.

The X was obviously applied after the tag was riveted in place.
Might it have been an indication of a write off, insurance or otherwise?

Looks like the mark was made with a flat screwdriver- it doesnt look symmetrical like it was made with a tool? One mark looks like a double strike. Also looks like it was there a long time.

Since we havent seen this before on a Cdn built car, it may not be factory, if it was factory youd think there would be other vehicles marked like this.

Pretty sure Ive seen an X stamped on USA built Chevies, but on trim tags.

D.D. on VIN . In 1963 someone in GM Warranty thought it was a good idea at the time, not well thought out, executed or accepted by dealers.

The D.D on VIN was a GM corporate Warranty initiative started in 1963, expecting the local service departments to comply. Expecting them to stamp VINs with the general Month & Year. The first issue discovered was the welded VIN plate could suffered shock from stamp dies causing separation from door jam, this created a potential legal issue for the dealers. This and impracticable inconvenience was a major reason for dealers Not to comply. Soon rosette rivets helped somewhat. From 1965-72 (POP) Protecto O Plate with the actual date delivered to customer eliminated the need for stamping . By 1969 VIN was now under windshield area. Interestingly GM had no problem making thousands of yearly parts changes, yet took several years to replace a simple VIN plate

See below Zone area (SB) Service Bulletin attachment referring to the original (TSB) Technical Service Bulletin issued by Corporate nationwide.
