After 10 years my mower is dying a slow death

My $700 Poulon ride on mower is on it's last legs. She started using oil this season and quit after cutting the grass at my barn. I pulled the plug and...

I can't complain since the mower was about 3 years old when I got it and it has a LOT of hours on it. So.. do I put another 17.5hp Briggs into it (they are now $1200!) or treat myself to a 52" zero turn and have a wallet breach as a result?

Or I can keep cleaning the plug and adding oil..

Clean the plug or replace it and see how long it takes to foul again. Might get the rest of summer before all the mowers go on sale.
Quit using mixed gas, LMAO.

Canadian Tire did sell spark plug non foulers, I dont know if they still have them. Essentially its a spacer adapter that moves the spark plug further out from the cylinder head to make the plug run hotter. One of these would probably work for the rest of this season then maybe in the winter you could pull the engine apart and see if it could be repaired.

Good idea about the non fouling plug. I'll see if I can find one.

My 59 el Camino made the a couple of plugs look like that every 1000 miles, had to clean them and go another 1000. It burned oil at 50:1, 50 litres of gas to a liter of oil, I called it my 2 stroke 283.

You can probably find another good used b&s?

My friend Abe has a 2008 kubota ride on, Koehler 18hp. He was having trouble keeping it running past month, we decided a new solenoid for the fuel shutoff and a carb kit would get it running again, did that, couldnt get it to start. He took it to the dealer he got it from, the guy called him and said they found the problem, it wouldnt run on diesel. I asked him if it had gas in it, he said yes, I just filled it. I never smelled anything but gas, just what was in the line. They drained it and changed filters, it ran fine.

No luck so far finding a used engine but I'll keep an eye out.

You have to think carefully before you buy a zero-turn lawnmower.

You can't drive one with a broken arm sadangel.gif

Those cheap replacement engines aren't the greatest quality necessarily.

Can't you get the engine rebuilt? I'm guessing a new set of rings and a look at the valves might be in order.

Yes and that's something I can consider in the off season. I don't have time right now and with all this rain the grass is growing like crazy. I can't go without the mower for an extended period of time. It runs fine with the plug cleaned.

In 1999, I had my 301 Kohler rebuilt for a cost of $1200.
Seemed like a lot at that time.
It lost the timing gear yesterday.
The young mechanic who built it then, now owns the dealership.

I mowed today without stallage. I did about 2 hours worth. A few puffs of blue here and there. I'll likely nurse it until the end of season. Who knows, maybe next year I'll buy a property without grass to cut.
