The worst that I ever saw was a 1969 ElCamino with 75,000 miles and no oil change. It was a company car and the driver didnt know that he was responsible for the oil changes.

What would the oil change interval on that 24,000 km 2020 have been?

On the 2019 Toyota Prius's we had at Lordco they were 16,000 km oil change intervals.

The newer vehicles I've seen have a maintenance minder that monitors vehicle usage and calculates maintenance intervals. Depending upon number of cold starts, city vs highway driving, and I'm sure a myriad of other factors, I've seen intervals as short as 12,000-ish kms and as long as 16,000-ish. I've also seen some of the newer vehicles with pretty dirty-appearing oil before the interval was up.

The thing with the first oil filter (and presumably the first oil) is that I'd expect it to still contain some of the product of break-in. Probably not the best for long term prospects.

I'd be worried about a WELL maintained small 1.5 litre engine with a turbo. Any history on these engines? Do they last? Direct injection?

It's now becoming recognized that the turbo engines have maintenance minders that are pretty out to lunch.

You routinely see the Ecoboost V6 going out to 12k if daily driven a decent amount. But the truth is it really needs a change every 6-8000 with full synth if you want it to live to see 200.

To answer your question Todd, I'd say even the 1.5 Turbo can last. Just change the oil every 6k.

I'd say the normally asperated engines have minders that can certainly be followed.

I know I threw these guys when I pointed out the filter without markings.

They thought I was after a lower price, Nope.

Has anybody seen an aftermarket filter without any markings on it at all?

I stand my ground on this one, that's an original filter on it.

Probably a leased car turned in and not taken care of because of the lease, not owned.

My 98 VW tdi went 350,000kms on 15,000km synthetic, still no oil consumption issues when I sold it. My gas 2003 vw 1.8t went 350,000 with synthetic changes at 8,000kms. Never ever had to add oil to these cars between oil changes. Vw has never recommended longer than 8,000 km oil changes on gas or shorter than 15,000 kms on diesel.

Ive not owned a vehicle with oil monitoring, has there been much history of failures using this technology? I believe the heavy truck fleets test their engine oil regularly for wear and have seen oil changes go out to 25-50,000kms, I think they have been 100% synthetic for 20 years for everything in the drivetrain.

The biggest killer of engine oil is contamination. Cars driven on short trips build up condensation and fuel dilution in the oil. Cars driven continuously dont have as much of a problem because the engine is at a constant temperature that reduces fuel and condensation buildup. I have seen salesmen on the road that only changed oil once a year, sometimes with more than 12,000 miles on the oil and didnt seem to have any more problems than cars with much lower mileage. Of course this was back in the seventies, no turbos or other sensitive systems.

Since moving to PEI I change my oil twice a year- in the spring and fall regardless of miles. I have summer and winter cars so each never see more than 10k each season. The truck sees about 200 miles in the winter if that and about 300 miles in the summer.

It's good you followed your instincts Randy and walked, and there are many more out there to choose from anyway.

I mean, how many people will pull the stick, see tar, glance down at that unmarked filter and know what they're looking at? I hope you let the sales guy know what you know, but at the same time they'll just get it in for a change and the next guy will never know.

Is there a way you can see the service record of a used car? In that will the oil changes show up?

CARFAX frequently shows oil changes and mileage if done at a shop that reports.

I love that you had these guys scratching their heads Randy! confuse I am a firm believer in regular oil changes. I have a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 3.8 that just clocked 506,000 miles. I am the second owner and bought it with 23,000 miles. I have used Spectra Tech synthetic blend oil and changed it every 3,500 miles. The oil after all, is the engines life blood and you have to keep it clean. aww
