Need help from older military (specifically Air Force) guys

My wife and I are doing a major "purge". Too much junk in the house that sits in boxes for years without being used.

But I did come across something cool I never knew I had. My dad's RCAF card from WW2. I know very little about his time in the Air Force as he died when I was 11.  I know he was NOT a pilot, that's about it!

Any help would be great, especially some of the abbreviations.

That's cool! You look so much like your Dad.
If no one gets you any answers soon, I can get my daughter to ask when she is at Air Cadets on Thursday night. Maybe one of the reg force members can shed some light on it.

I dug through my grandfather's stuff and have not found anything conclusive.

Was your dad colour blind ?

My grandfather was recruited because he was.

He did missions over Poland in that glass bubble under the plane because colour blind me have better overall sight and are not fooled by camouflage.

They had a lot of men to service planes.

Knowing you, he was probably an aircraft mechanic biggrin

My mom was in the Air Force in WW2 and I have some of her records too. I doubt there are any of the same codes or any clarification, but I will check.

Carl,

AC2

The rank was introduced to the RAF in January 1919, replacing the ranks of "air mechanic", "private" and "clerk"

that had been introduced under Air Memorandum No. 1 in March 1918.

There were three grades: leading aircraftman (LAC), aircraftman 1st class (AC1) and aircraftman 2nd class.

NON-COMMISIONED RANKS

The non-commissioned rank insignia was worn centred on the upper sleeve on all orders of dress except the Warrant Officer's (WO) insignia which was worn on the cuff.

The RCAF rank of Aircraftman 2nd class (AC2) had no insignia.

The present CF rank insignia of Private (Pte) also has no insignia.

The RCAF rank of Aircraftman 1st class (AC1) had no insignia.

The present CF rank insignia of Private Trained (Pte [T]) is a single inverted chevron.

The RCAF ranks of AC2 and AC1 had no distinguishing badges.

The RCAF rank of Leading Aircraftman (LAC) was a propeller.

The present CF rank insignia of Corporal (Cpl) is two inverted chevrons.

The RCAF rank of Cpl had two inverted chevrons and was equal to the present CF rank of Master Corporal (MCpl).

The MCpl insignia has a maple leaf above the two inverted chevrons.

An RCAF Sergeant (Sgt) had three inverted chevrons and is equal to the present CF rank of Sgt except the present insignia has a maple leaf above the three inverted chevrons.

The RCAF rank of Flight Sergeant (F/Sgt) had a brass or cloth crown worn above three inverted chevrons.

The design of the crown changed from the King's Crown to the Queen's Crown with the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952.

The present CF rank insignia of WO is the St. Edward's crown.

The RCAF rank of Warrant Officer 2nd Class (WO2) was the King's or Queen's Crown.

The present CF rank insignia of Master Warrant Officer (MWO) has the St. Edward's crown inside a laurel wreath.

The senior RCAF non-commissioned rank was Warrant Officer 1st Class (WO1) had the British Coat of Arms.

The present CF rank insignia of Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) has a larger sized Coat of Arms of Canada

That helps but I'm still uncertain about the A/CPL meaning.

I don't believe he was in planes that were on any sort of missions. From the little I do know his description might have had to do with "Service Police"?

I have his uniform and could post pictures of it. Will anything on there be an indicator?

Looks like he was only posted in Canada, not overseas.

Correct, never left Canada during the war.

Carl,

CPL  generally means Corporal from what I see in Documentation.

From this site on Canadian Military Abbreviations:

https://wartimes.ca/research/abbreviations/#A

  • Assistant
  • Acting (Rank) - higher rank held on a temporary basis - also known as a brevet rank for officers

So it could be Assistant Corporal

or Acting Corporal.  I'm guessing Assistant since Acting sounds like it's only temporary.

Any badges on the uniform ?

I'll get the uniform out later and get some pictures.

Thanks to everyone who has helped so far. We're getting somewhere!

I would say judging by the uniform and the little bit I know about this, there is no rank shown on this?

I thought the stripes show the rank.

Carl,

The rank insignia of a corporal was traditionally a 2-bar chevron worn point down.

That fits right in with the A/CPL.

Interesting, thanks. For some reason I thought all the air force uniforms I had seen had at least 2 bars but that must not be true. Private would be one bar I assume?

Yup Carl, your assumption is right.

Private First Class (PFC) wear a rank insignia of a single chevron pointing down.

Manitoba, northwest of Brandon. Airstrip is still there but not used, kind of an industrial area. Part of the runway used occasionally for drag racing.
