And who knows who else cheated in gas engines?

EVERYONE cheated in the early days.

GM with T.C.S., or Transmission Controlled Spark was an emissions device to.. bla bla bla. It was a timer to lock out vacuum advance until you were in either reverse or high gear for 30 seconds continuously. Why? I'll tell you why, the dyno emissions test took 15 to 20 seconds. To drive a car all day long with the base timing as set back then and then lock out advance, well, it would be a thirsty and lazy pig (kinda like why the factory mid 70's 454s were dogs in factory tune). Yet you couldn't sell it if it didn't pass the emission test on the car submitted.

Caterpillar threw in the towel for over the road diesels because of the unattainable (or at too high a cost) emissions targets. It also dropped the engine life down by 66%.

Just keep setting standards until they can't be met. So much for 125 years of development and dutiful compliance.

The Story heard on vw was a university group wanted to test actual emissions using a tailpipe sniffer while driving down the road. They picked vw as it was the rare vehicle that exceeded the window sticker mpg number. Never heard of any car exceeding the window sticker.

I dont miss the smell of the old diesels, an old Mack R model putting out a black cloud of smoke going down the road. You pretty much never smell a diesel anymore or gas vehicle, other than us old car guys. The new stuff is just so complicated, very expensive to maintain, and much of that has nothing to do with emissions.

You know, I have never seen any soot or diesel particulates on the so-called offending VWs, not like the older ones, especially the pre-turbo early diesels. The older ones also got 70+ Imperial mpg.

One of the selling points when GM put the Oldsmobile diesel into numerous vehicles was that there was "no emissions plumbing". No catalytic converter either.

my dad bought a brand new 1979 Olds 98 Diesel. After 3 engines he gave up on it. It got a very good at the time 30 miles to the gallon. was not that long and you could buy an Olds with a 307 gas that got that milage

There is a documentary on Netflix... Dirty Money. In the end all the big auto companies chipped in to help pay VW's fine in return they were not exposed for the same computer/emissions cheat.

None of it will matter soon as all the manufacturers will have to be producing only electric in 11 years.

Dont bet on that. The electrical infrastructure will need to be expanded dramatically to facilitate convenient recharging. You can fill a gas powered car in 10 minutes. Cant charge an EV to full capacity in less than 4 hours?

Supposedly Toyota will have a new battery out, solid state, that takes 10 minutes to charge to 80%, range 1000-1200kms. Due for high volume production in 2027, thats 3 years. A game changer if it works, but you still need the electrical infrastructure. How will it work at -10/20c, will it cost $75,000 or $30,000, etc, still lots of issues.

As this EV or say hydrogen/non petroleum vehicle fleet is introduced, will gas go back to $1 a liter or lower? Will manufacturers still cheat?

I'm just saying that discussions about companies cheating on diesel emissions are soon going to be a thing of the past because in 2035 all new vehicles sold in Canada will have to be zero emission vehicles.

The US is moving in that direction as well, however politics (which we won't/can't discuss here) can change everything (as they can in this country as well).

As far as the grid goes, I'm hearing that there will be investments happening (that we, as users, will ultimately pay for) to bring it up to snuff, as the power utilities are seeing a massive wave of wealth coming their way in the form of selling much more energy to customers (essentially taking money to power vehicles, that would have gone to the oil companies).  I won't even guess how that's going to play out.

In terms of whether manufacturers will cheat... some probably will, if they think they can get away with it, but they also may not have to as the technologies evolve.  Also keep in mind that EV companies from China are also massively investing in production plants in Mexico so that they can circumvent the current tariff situation - they are intending to become the world's leader in the automotive industry, it seems.

I'm no expert, so take my comments as just my opinion based upon what I see happening out there.
