It probably had a warranty engine early in its life. If it has the later design DX engine with the revised head bolts it may be okay. I owned one and didnt have any serious issues other than oil leaks. Good fuel mileage though.
Yes, for the era they sure did well on fuel. In the later year B bodies the 350 throttle body cars with 2.56 gears did similar fuel economy and those had the benefit of a durable engine vs the diesel.

There was recently a 1980 GMC pickup at Pick-n-Pull that had the 350 Olds Diesel in it. I debated taking the hydroboost off it, but it was all metric fittings.
I see this wagon also has the hydroboost on it, as well as cruise control.
The "Chevrolet" (sic) Oldsmobile 350 did not withstand the test of time, they released it prematurely minus a few details like a water separator for the fuel, and the 22.5:1 compression revealed the shortcomings of the head bolts. After they destroyed the diesel reputation, GM went on to improve the diesels but the damage was done. The 4.3 V6 diesel actually had all its ducks in a row.
GM owned Detroit Diesel, you would think GM could have done way better on the Oldsmobile 350 diesel. At least the heavier diesel block is a good place to start an Olds gas 350 or 403 build.
In Louisiana back in 1991 I followed an early 80's Pontiac Grand Prix that had a "Diesel 5.7" on the trunk lid & dual exhaust outlets. I have not seen another since. I don't know how few they made but they only made 138 Monte Carlo Diesels in 1984.
