Polishing 1991 Miata faded plastic bumpers

Working on a friends miata, the whole car is faded bad. Red paint on metal is single stage and rubbing compound a wax brings that back pretty good. Any ideas on getting the plastic bumper better looking other than paint.

Car never got waxed or washed much in the last 15 years, very low mileage annually, never driven in the winter or rain, no rust on the body, a nice driving little car. Had a very good quality top on it a couple of years ago. So far Ive only waxed the driver side rear fender in these pictures. IMG_8599.jpegIMG_8598.jpegIMG_8597.jpegIMG_8596.jpeg

Nice Miata. I'd love one.

Use a high speed orbital buffer (DA) with a 6" foam pad. Use an aggressive paint levelling compound and go heavy on it. Be easier on the edge. Low RPM to start, then move to high to finish. Clean the pad when it loads up. Use a microfiber towel on edge to finish the groove and to get around the emblems.

Finish with a fine glaze/sealer.

I say use an electric DA because you really cannot get the heat needed to cut the paint and plastic by hand.

Ironically I have a 99 Miata in my garage that I'm doing a spot repair on. My friend owns the car and he removed the bumper emblem and in doing so damaged the paint. His has only 80-something KM's on it and it's in great shape. It will be for sale soon. He turned 75 and it's a bit of a chore getting in and out of. They are fun cars to drive

Thanks for the info, sounds like a job for a pro, or just have the bumpers painted.

Have you tried to cut and polish the bumper? Is the clear coat gone?

Are the bumpers molded in colour?

No evidence it has a clear coat, no peeling, a careful treatment the same as the body paint has no positive effect.

I wonder if a light sanding, then some of that 2K clear out of a spray can would bring it back? Worth a try. Princess Auto is now selling 2K automotive clear in a spray can that you don't have to worry about going hard as soon as you start using it. $29 a can.
