I think ultimately a spin on adapter would be the way to go Ted, most of us with the pre 68's have converted them over. But Mike's in a time crunch on this one.

Georgetown will be a nice morning drive.

What is interesting is how this base crumbled. I suppose over time the oil flowing down through those side holes on it's way down to the element caused stress cracks to form in the unsupported die casting. That outer ring is not supported, the element seal sits on the center, and the can contacts a seal that sits on the block alongside the outer ring. As far as I know the ring only serves to retain the cannister seal.

On the 67 unit there are 6 webs below the ring, so it at least looks stronger.

Is this a common failure?

More research tells me the bypass plate 3959104 that failed on Mikes wagon is a 68-69 Truck only part.

The other one 5673842 shown here, far the more common, is as far as I know a 55-67 Passenger car, Small or BB part. This part appears to have larger holes, as well as 2 more in the outer ring than the truck part.

Ive not heard of one of these failing, look close at the block area where this mounted, maybe there is an irregular surface.

Right???   I cant see any issue with the block.  I know someone had had the engine out at some point and not been super gentle bases on the dents in the very corners of the oil pan.   I can only think they banged the canister that started the initial old crack based on the colouration.

CDNPONT Mark got us all fixed up. A big should put to a guy that made the gasket for the part, then delivered it to my front doo while I was at work. We cant say thank you enough to this forum and Mark for all your help. The car is back together and will be off to the show tomorrow as planned with one very happy lady behind the wheel.

Glad to help.

I'll admit, at first glance I was shocked at all the oil under the car....

It seems strange to see that the plate is broken like that.

The canister presses against the seal and not the plate as I remember?

I do remember the seal could sometimes be very tough to remove.

Possibly someone was trying to carelessly dig the seal out in the past?

Maybe cracked it with a big screwdriver or something while digging?

I always preferred the canister type oil filter over the screw on.

Considered it blasphemy to convert one over.

Some newer cars have switched back. lol

Good to hear it got resolved !!

Thanks
Randy

I knew it was water, but it would have been a funny picture with your wife smiling like that after a disaster.

she has been known to do that... buy was very sad in this instance being this is something we worked very hard on... She did comment that if the motor had gone perhaps it would have been 409 time... I can only wonder what might have been.
