Another scam to look out for

I listed my friend's 99 Miata on FB Marketplace. I got an inquiry from someone with a sketchy ID. He asked a couple of questions and then requested a VISTAVIN report,

I had never heard of VISTAVIN and did a google. A VIN searching site under that name came up. I replied to the guy that I'd have to see if my friend wanted to spend the $$ on the report.

He replied "Oh you can get the history with just the plate number" (BS) and he'd "make a deal for the asking price if it was clean". He also supplied a link to the site

A further search showed a Reddit thread where a guy got a similar request. Turns out this site is a Phishing site that steals your credit card info.

So, if anyone asks for a report offer up a Carfax instead.

The "latest" scam here in Ontario. The buyer will ask you for the VIN to check Carfax for accidents (so they say). They have your VIN now, change the ownership over to themselves and send the tow truck to pick up their broken down car....

Im in Ontario, and I recently asked a seller for the VIN, because i had to buy a UVIP (Used Vehicle Information Package) which is mandatory for the seller to provide in Ontario when selling a vehicle. And the seller was too damn ignorant  to get one. So I had to pay for that package because I wanted to ensure the vehicle was his and wasnt stolen. Im in the GTA area. There are lots of people selling cars and/or trying to flip them, and still dont know that in Ontario, the seller is legally required to provide the UVIP, they need to provide that package(which also on the back holds the bill of sale for both to sign).

How do they get ownership with just a VIN?  If thats the case, couldnt anybody walk up to any car they want and just write down the VIN to get ownership?

That is an excellent (and paranoia inducing!) question!

I dont see how they can, like I said in Ontario, its legally required to get a UVIP package. On the back of that is the bill of sale which requires both signatures. So the MTO wants the UVIP, mainly the bill of sale portion that is on the back to be signed by both parties PLUS the back part of the ownership signed to transfer the car under the name.

In Ontario, you need that package unless you are a dealer.

A few months ago I had a response to my ad and the person wanted me to sign up to a website to verify my  vin.  The site was charging me 50.00 for the info package.  I indicated I would not pay.  The text conversation went on for over an hour and 45  text messages that I was charged for.  I finally signed off.

Didnt even want to know anything about the car..

I don't know how they do it, but I've heard it's been done.  Probably some "insider" help at the licensing office.

Yeah, there must be more to the story.  It just seems too easy to be able to take ownership just by having the VIN, which is openly visible on any vehicle.  There must be somebody who has access to the owner's info plus have the ability to print off official documents, and put it in the system.  Even then, I would think the owner would only have to report the vehicle stolen and then the doodoo hits the fan, if it's an RMV insider.  Nowadays there's a digital footprint for everything.

Lots of stolen cars around now, modern ones, with fake vins, not sure how that works in this day and age of computers. They know at cdn tire if you make a mistake in giving them a wrong vin.

whenever anyone texts you and asks for a report you haven't heard of and then say just go here to get it-and its always a fake website to steal your credit card info.I was selling a small tin boat and told several guys texting from all over the place out of Canada asking for the boat report-figured out pretty quick and told them where they could go.Brutal

There are scammers everywhere.
