1989 Pontiac Safari 3 pedals


Never saw this car before but probably some of you have. A woody wagon converted to manual, on a road course racing a 370Z.

It depends on how you want to do it. 

When I did my 94 SS, I used the full 94 Trans Am 6 speed conversion pulled from a wreck. On those cars, the clutch master sticks through the firewall into the engine compartment. I wanted it all inside the car, not wanting to cut the firewall. The 2 priorities were cylinder inside and the pedals must look and feel natural as if GM built it. I put the Trans Am brake pedal into the B body pedal hanger, which required some mods to the hanger. Then I built a clutch pedal basically from scratch using parts of different clutch pedals including an S10 clutch pedal. Thankfully I had a scrapped Impala that was gutted so it was a great place to test fit (as shown in one of the pics where you see maroon paint).

I used all the stock Trans Am stuff for the clutch, bellhousing etc. Trans is the same length as a 700 so the driveshaft is the same but the crossmember needs to be modified a bit. The floor needed a bit of massaging at one corner of the trans for clearance but that only took maybe 10 minutes. All said and done it was very stock looking and feeling to drive and what a fun car, a B body 6 speed.

The clutch pedal needs to have that U shaped inset above the pedal pad because if it's flat and not U shaped there the sole of your shoe pressed against that part when you push the pedal in. That was the most difficult part of the whole swap, making that pedal so it still fit inside the firewall with the hydraulic cylinder but still was comfortable to press down on.

The results look factory Carl, your usual high quality work. Did I tell you I hate automatics? Especially on the highway, always in the wrong gear when you need power or engine braking.

 I never would have guessed, good thing you mentioned it!

And thanks for the kind words, it was a lot of fun doing it and when we sold the car about 8 years later (daily driver 24/7/365 for that time) the conversion hadn't given a stitch of trouble. Never even added clutch cylinder fluid, it was still the same fluid from the Trans Am in the system. I put about 100,000 miles (not km's) on it in that time.

X2 on what Don said. Top marks on that clean conversion, Carl!

Chevrolet Engineering did a few manual transmission versions as toys, never with the intention of making things compliant & able to be sold. Some with Mark V big blocks.

I also hate automatics generally. Give me a clutch and let me choose. Even in heavy traffic. The Pogo Effect in traffic is a North American phenomenon because of all the automatics.


I've been a fan of those big downsized GM B-bodies since they were introduced. A '79 Parisienne coupe with buckets, or the same as a Bonneville with a 403, or maybe a '79 Oldsmobile Holiday 88 coupe, or a '77 LeSabre Sport Coupe with 403 power, or a Caprice or Impala cantilever rear windowed coupe with F41...


As for the wagon with wood-grain siding, wire wheel-covers & whitewalls, WOW. A master of disguise. Back in the late 90's when I worked in Mississauga I used to have a regular walk-in that would talk cars with me. He had a late 80's Parisienne Safari and was in the process of ordering all the replacement wood-grain from the dealer. He was into GMs from the mid-70s through the 80s, and gave me a few G-body build sheets. He is the sort of guy who spots obscure details (Steve P. if you are out there thumbsup.gif  )

The only place I prefer autos is a boat ramp during retrieval when someone is driving my truck and Im on my boat motoring onto a trailer.
