This is probably outdated information. The "antique" plate has been around for decades but nobody ever used it because you could only drive to a show or parade. The new "collector" plate is totally different. As far as i know you need to follow all the same rules as a regular plate would.

Both of my cars bear collector plates. They were both registered previously as pleasure, requiring a safety. I just had to have them appraised to have a value greater than $5,000 and they had to be 25+ years old to get the collector plates.

i believe that Dave is correct that a valid safety would be required to register a vehicle with a collector plate, the same as would be required for pleasure or all-purpose to register a newly aquired vehicle. Changing categories doesnt require a safety, just writing a cheque.

I suspect that is true. It just seemed to good to be true about the antique plates but I don't even know if they exist any more. I sure haven't seen one in a long time.

It's really strange here in PEI in regards to antique plates. You have to be a member of the PEI antique car club to qualify:

Antique vehicles require a special license plate issued through the Prince Edward Island Antique Car Club. Under section 1(c) of the Highway Traffic Act Motor Vehicle Inspection Regulations, an antique motor vehicle includes a vehicle:

which is at least 30 years old or a classic recognized by the Classic Car Club of America;
which has been certified by an inspector for authenticity, running order and safety;
which is an insured motor vehicle;
which is not used as a private passenger vehicle or for commercial purposes; and,
the owner of which is a member of the Prince Edward Island Antique Auto Club and has one or more vehicles registered in their name.
Vehicles being considered for antique plates must be inspected at a PEI Highway Safety Inspection Station in the name of the owner prior to being considered for an antique plate. As noted, antique vehicles must be insured and although exempt from periodic (annual) inspections under the PEI Highway Traffic Act, must initially be certified by an inspector for authenticity, running order and safety.

Antique cars are not to be used as a private passenger vehicle or for commercial purposes. Antique vehicles are operated solely for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades and other similar functions, and used for occasional family pleasure but, in no event, for general transportation or business purposes

Todd, my Dad was a member of the Association when this was set up, they initiated it with the Province and negotiated all those rules. The first plates were plexiglass with a label that stuck to them, there was a space at the bottom for square numbers to be added, they were your plate number. He had a 1940 Ford convertible, naturally it had plate number 040.The Association controlled the plates and numbers, the Province controlled the motor vehicle registration. Started in the early 70s.

NS antique plates require a one time mechanical inspection by a licensed mechanic. Plates renew annually, very inexpensive, I think I pay $25 or so a year. I have a NS antique car plate from 1969 and a Maine one from 1962.

That's interesting Don. I think PEI is the only province that does it this way.
