Arizona Junkyard Holds Over 10,000 Classic American Cars

Just watch out for rattlesnakes - biggrin

Over 10,000 American classic cars were found slumbering in an Arizona scrapyard. Best of all, the junk yard is still opened for business.

I've been to that Casa Grande location a few times. Last time would have been over a dozen years ago.

Did you get to both yards they have in Casa Grande or just the one in the picture?

I just looked it up, I've been to their yard at 900 W Cottonwood Lane, usually recognized by the hill to the north with a big water tank on it.  No way it held 10,000 cars though.

I've also been a couple times to their old main yard on the north end of Phoenix (23811 N 7th Avenue), and only once to a smaller yard (2227 W Happy Valley Rd) they had near I17 heading north out of Phoenix.  I've never been to their new main yard at 22213 N 21st Ave (also near I17 heading north out of Phoenix).   I've also never been to their Black Canyon yard (about 30 miles north of Phoenix along I17, 21390 Smitty Way, Black Canyon City) as it wasn't in operation when I've been down.

Outlined in black is the mostly 64 and older yard. Outlined in red is the mostly 65 and newer yard. Did you get to both?

I've been to the yard outlined in black in 2005 and about 2007.  The yard outlined in red didn't exist when I was there.

Take a look at nearby Mesa. The old Mesa AZ GM Proving Grounds has been mostly built over. That is where the press ran cars like 1967 SS427 on the banked oval at 130 mph.

If you want to venture into Google Maps 3-D, try this link and set the "layers" to "time lapse" if it isn't already (it should already be though).

The oval was there until GM's restructuring. Within 2 years they started building on the site.

I've flown over it, nothing to see now I'm afraid.

The Nissan proving grounds near Maricopa looks pretty impressive on Google, wish they gave tours.

Where do you enter the Casa Grande yard outlined in red?

You go to the black yard first, they give you permission (nobody at the red yard) and you park outside the driveway just south of Denvil Drive.

I don't know how it came to end up in Arizona, but about 10 - 15 years ago that place (DVAP) had a Canadian Pontiac for parts. It was a 1961 Parisienne Sport Sedan, 283 3-speed manual, p/s, p/b, 2-tone. It was solid enough to think it originally was a Prairie car or Okanogan Valley car. It had all the hard parts like the Canadian air cleaner & body trim.
