Holes for power windows harness


Hey there. I'm about to start putting power windows in. I found those two plates (round and oval) on the doors and fenders. Are those for power window harness? If so, are they welded in or bolted from the inside and can be removed?

I assume I have to take off the doors to drill the holes if those plugs are not unscrewable?

4SPEED427 (Carl) should chime in as he's done a number of cars, I'm guessing mainly 66's though.
I can't speak to the oval hole on the door, but the round one on the body should just push in with a punch.
Carl has previously stated doors don't need to come off for power window harness installation.
Let's see what he chimes in with.

They just pop out. There are just a couple of tabs holding them in. Did P/W in ma few of my cars. The conduit boots, if original, will pop in and stay in place.

So really they are just partially punched out. You just complete the knockout?

Watching intently as I hope to do the same on the 69 Rag.

 

Could you make a separate post on adding the PW's? It would be great to see it done.

Oh, it's going to be a long project as I don't have much time per day. For now I'm just cleaning/lubing the mechanisms and wiring, looking for some missing button retainers and coloring wire diagrams. Will hook them up to a battery, test them and start installing slowly, will take pictures for sure.

Phew, I was afraid i had to drill the car and take the damn fender off again (it was a nightmare I had to go through during door alignment), thanks everyone, will punch those plates through.

 Sorry, I was in away all day in a wrecking yard, just sat down exhausted but happy at the computer!

Exactly as Vince stated, pop out plugs that have a couple of weak spot welds holding them in and the original boots have a groove in them to hold them in place. If you don't have original boots just let me know and I can post pictures of the boots. I just picked up a pair in the auto wrecking today.

I have a pair of these L shaped boots, they seem should be screwed to the body and  the door through the holes, so I'm not sure they are original. When I google the ones for impala I see straight shaped ones with 3 wide areas.

Ignore the wrinkles and crinkles and kinks, they are 60 years old!  I plan to put some sort of round tube through them, then gently heat them with a heat gun to bring them back to original shape.

Yes I haven't checked the books but I think 65-67 use the same boot. Seems to me 68 changed. For sure 69 is different than the ones I pictured.

does anyone by any chance know that circuit breaker amperage for 65s wiring to battery? I see it's 40A for 64 but i have no info on 65. Same 40A?

As always i colored the diagrams for 64-65 if anyone wants to use.
