Another rare find - 1970 Pontiac 2+2 convertible 454

I've known of this car since the early 2000's, and I think someone else posted a few photo's of it around that time.  I grabbed some stuff of it in the mid 2000's, when I did the 454 transplant into my 70 2+2 convertible.

It's rough, and missing a lot of parts, but strange as it may sound I have many of the parts it needs, including the original engine.  I also have a spare 70 CB code Turbo 400 tranny for it.

I returned to it a month or so ago, with the pipe dream of maybe making it a driver, but it's too much of a project for me.  Unfortunately, to do the car any justice, it'd take some fairly deep pockets.

I tried to have Vintage Vehicle Services document how many 2+2 454 convertibles were made, but they were unable to.   I know of 4, and likely a 5th.   The best they could do is narrow it down to how many Impala (16467), Parisienne (76467) & 2+2 (76867) convertibles with LS4 345 hp 454, and that total is 35.   I presume the Impala number was only the Oshawa amount, no US plants.

Missing the disc brake setup.

Front Corner Passenger side.jpg

Also missing the disc brake setup, and more rust showing.

Lorne 2.jpg

Not sure why someone would have unbolted the dash.

Quarter Panel Passenger side.jpg

Passenger quarter panel will need some major work.  Driver side also needed some major surgery.

Engine Stamping.jpg

Notice how the partial VIN and engine stamping overlap each other.  My other 70 454 engines don't do that.

This was probably a pretty nice car when built, and nicely optioned.   My buddy Wes here in Calgary had the small block equivalent of this car (but with a white top), but sadly passed away about 5 years ago.

No N10 dual exhausts on that 345 HP car only the 390 HP 454 came with duals.

N10 optional on all V8 but not standard. Only the 390 HP cars got duals standard.

It's not listed anywhere, but is for sale.

My thought was to maybe make it into a driver.  But checking VIN with Alberta Registries, it doesn't appear in the Alberta database which goes back to 1983.  As such, it'd require an Out of Province Inspection, which would require a lot of rust repair, bringing the investment way more than I want to be in for.

That seems like a strange rule.  It's okay to drive an unsafe car on the road, as long as it's in the database.  You gotta wonder what bureaucrat came up with that one.

We don't have annual inspections, etc here.   So the bureaucrats haven't come up with the annual inspections, or inspections upon change of ownership, so there's no bureaucrat money grab.

There used to be the identical car running around the East Kootenay's in the '80's-'90's but a blueish green. It was a 2+2 454 car. Very cool car.

I wonder if it's the same car.  This was a light green originally.

The Duesenburg-inspired Grand Prix led to the frontal theme for '70:

Power front disk brakes, 15x6 Rally Wheels, buckets with console were all standard. H78-15 tires were standard with the 400 & the 454s. H70-15 red stripe (last time) or white-stripe were optional.

Ray is correct, only the LS5 came with dual exhausts as standard. The LS4 had a large single r.h.s. exhaust (other were l.h.s.).

The LS4 454 shared the same general-performance cam with the 396/325, 402/330 and 427/335.

The LS5 had a hotter cam shared with the 396/350, 427/390 (plus Corvette L68). On the 396 they ran a Holley but on the 427/390 they stuck with a Quadrajet.

The low figure of 35 LS4s includes all Impala, Parisienne & 2+2 convertibles. Hillar's old LS4 Laurentian coupe would have had a different figure estimated across the Bel Air & Laurentian coupes. Does anyone have the number?

I saw a unique Canada-only '70 Bel Air coupe in Hamilton in the early 1970s. It had an LS5, stabilizer bars (B07 police), H70-15 red-stripe tires on factory 15x6 Rally Wheels. Based on that recollection I made up a picture of how it looked:
