Citroën Fourgonette at Goodwood (?!)

I was always intrigued by the way cars from different countries used to carry strong influences from their local ways. With the French cars they always seemed to hold the road with aplomb, while still delivering a nice ride. Even when that included the crop of little 2-cylinder micro-cars and trucks.

Somebody decided to unleash one of these 9-horsepower twirlers loose on a Gymkhana course. Only go there if you've got 39 seconds to waste:

I guess stabilizer bars were too heavy, all things considered.

They were scaled for olde Europe with it's carriage routes and narrow gates, whatever was left after WWII (still quite a lot, surprisingly).

Had his eye on this instead of that yellow 66? This yellow thing will haul more parts and beer, maybe?

I'm sure the moderator Mr. Stevenson made the mock "ban" only because he didn't want to be seen with you when you bring out your funny French vehicle. Purist! wink

Well, since you ask I blame the wife on this one. When we were walking through France the last couple of years, every once in a while we would see a 2CV putting around and she would always say they were "so cute".  If we happened on one that was parked we would usually take a picture and once or twice she said coyly that "I could have one of these."  So being a dutiful, sensitive husband who is a good listener I stored that bit of info. heh heh

The bug to get one of these was on and off that last couple of years but I managed to resist it as they seemed to go for big bucks or they would have had be be imported which is something I had never done.  However this fall while I was  enduring a really long Air Tanker shift, i started to just idly check out kijiji and lo and behold there was this 1968 Fourgonnette for sale just outside of Edmonton. The price was pretty reasonable so I got my stepson to check it out. It ain't no  showpiece but it should have some life left in it (Pretty much like myself) so I went for it, telling the wife that i was merely acceding to her desires.  She was not too happy but had to mostly forego  the usual lecture about having too many vehicles.  That part was really satisfying, i have to admit.  Hoisted by her own petard!

So anyway the former owner had bought it from Quebec and had it repainted hoping to use it to promote his business but Covid screwed up his plans. It  sat in his garage for about five years with a few bits and pieces still off  the car. The gas went stale so it didn't  run very well when i came to pick it up and I have to admit  what with other stuff going and winter coming i have just stuck it in my garage along withe the Willys (kinda crowded in the one stall) until I can get to it.

Looking at the window sticker , it was in France at least until 1996 and the back storage area has a nicely crafted and still in good shape set of wooden side cupboards built in, so i don't think had really hard use. Maybe it was a baguette hauler!

Being a 1968, it is still a 6 volt system with the massive 425 cc engine and drum brakes so is pretty ancient tech even for a Citroen.  Parts seem to be available in Washington state or in Quebec so we shall see what it needs but I hope not too much.

These days going slower kind of appeals to me. I hope this spring to be scaring the crap out of people with it at 30 kph! And bleh to Carl!

Bleh to that car. I get disgusted even thinking you could possibly have owned such a cool yellow car (my 66) and such a whatever yellow car!biggrin
