Electronics guys - help with resistance wire please

Where can I find resistance wire? It needs to be approx .04 mm (.0015" diameter) and have resistance of roughly 40 ohms per foot. So far I'm having no luck with anything like that.

What about an old fuel sender? Harvest the winding from that then test?

Great idea. I'll have to check but it seems to me the later fuel senders are about 90 ohm and I think the early ones (maybe 1964 and prior?) are 30 ohms.

Great topic,  id love to find an answer too.  Ive had a couple bad or cut up ones over the years.   Just one more thing to collect at the junkyards i guess.

Yes, I'm hoping to get to Buck's in a warm spell after Christmas for some oil senders.

Dave, do you know the deal on fuel senders, 1964 vs 1965? Am I right in thinking 1964 is 30 ohm and 1965 is 90 ohm? It seems to me I read if you use the wrong one in the car they are WAY off.

How many feet do you need, i have an old dash / engine bay harness. Which would run from the ign. switch to coil.

Edit,I read other post. i have a new  64 full size fuel sending unit that may be correct wire. Its a 5/16 so i dont need it.

Pete, I have one of those resistor wires from ignition to coil and it barely makes a difference. I don't know electrical well enough, still learning but I thought I had something there until I put my ohm meter at each end of it. It reduces voltage but yet the ohm reading barely changes.

I'd be curious to put my ohm meter on each end of the wire of that 64 fuel sender.  I bet it has the right wire. Do you know for sure your 64 has a 30 ohm fuel gauge? I think it does but not 10% sure.

The fuel sending resistance for a 1960s GM vehicle is 030 ohms:

  • 19601966 GM trucks: The standard fuel sending resistance for these vehicles is 030 ohms.
  • Pre-1964 GM vehicles: The standard fuel sending resistance for these vehicles is 030 ohms.
Here are some other fuel sending resistance ranges for different vehicles:
  • 19651997 GM vehicles: The standard fuel sending resistance for these vehicles is 090 ohms.

  • 1998 and newer GM vehicles: The standard fuel sending resistance for these vehicles is 40 250 ohms.

  • Ford models prior to 1989: The standard fuel sending resistance for these vehicles is 73 10 ohms.

  • Most Chrysler models: The standard fuel sending resistance for these vehicles is 73 10 ohms.

  • Most Ford models 1989 and newer: The standard fuel sending resistance for these vehicles is 16 158 ohms.

So that says pre 1964 but I've seen on two different sites where they say 1964 and older is 30 ohm. Guess there's only one way to find out!

I grabbed that info off the web. 58-64 use the same sending unit. So i would disregard the pre 64 .

im out in the garage tomorrow. So ill meter my sending unit then.
