Fuel line for big block with Q-Jet

I have looked for a steel fuel line, to run from fuel pump to intake of  396/427 engines with Q-Jet

They are available from Jegs,Summit and Impala Bobs and more   it lists the package as 2 pieces and shows pictures of 2 full size lines

1. Anyone know why?    Q-jet has filter in carb

2.  I have seen positive and negative comments about running a fuel filter  "before" the fuel pump     I seem to have one, but was wondering why?

3.   thanks   and be nice

69 (427's anyway, not sure about 396's) & 70 LS4 & LS5 454's had an inline filter kind of tucked in by the drivers side of the water pump.  It then had a 1/4" return line from the filter back to the fuel tank.  The 69 & 70 lines differ as 70 had the TCS solenoid towards the front of the engine on the passenger side that the fuel line needed to go around.   I had a stock set of the 70 lines and they were sent to FineLines to be duplicated, and they're now available for sale.     If you could post a link or a photo of the 2 piece lines you're referring to I can take a look.

2. Simple answer: a fuel filter installed before the pump is a good idea because it will capture any debris from making it's way thru the pump.

I've installed a filter at the fuel tank (away from the exhaust). Works well, and easy to service + isn't an eyesore in the engine bay)

I don't remember the early 396's having a filter between the fuel pump and carb. For sure the 1969 and newer had a GF ### filter and would require a two part fuel line but I think the early engines had a one piece line from pump to carb. What year are you working on??

Thanks
Randy

I am installing a new chrome plated fuel tank, so I will add a filter back there with the dual electric fuel pump

The two pieces are the fuel line and brass fitting. The illustration is showing the same line from two angles.
Compatible with chrome plated fuel tank!!smile Not compatible with red heater hoses. LOL

Thanks
Randy

Try Inline Tube for the gas line.

With all the combinations of fuel pumps and carbs it is hard to know what to order. Inline promised to make me a new unit if I took an old one and cut and welded it up to show the desired shape.

Remember also that the fittings on the ends have to match your application.

I bought a piece of straight pre-made 3/8" fuel line from CT several years ago. It comes with the 1/4" NPT fittings on each end. You just have to bend it into shape. Measure the length you figure you need, and pick up a piece. We have tube benders at work, so it made the job a lot easier for me, but you can do without, if you're careful. Mine had a rubber hose too...Scary! Love the new black heater hoses!

Good suggestion   but you forgot to mention that you are a master fabricator at your work    I would need 5-6 pieces of steel and it still would look Mickey Mouse  biggrin

Hi guys, my stock early production 396 has just one line from the tank to the pump and one to the carb.  It looks like the one in the picture.  I had an original but it is was kind of cruddy so I bought some 3/8 line and fittings and with a double flare kit I made it look pretty original.  By the way big bear what kind of car did you dad have? That looks like quite the alternator. Was it for cop service or taxi ?

Wow, didn't even notice that, it appears to be the optional Leece-Neville I think it was called.

Here's a photo of the 427 in a 69 2+2. It shows the fuel filter:

The 70 454 lines are basically the same as the 69 427, but the upper line has to go around the TCS solenoid which is between the heater hose and the carb.  The kit is sold as 3 lines, as it includes the 1/4" vent line that goes back to down by the fuel pump to connect to the rigid line back to the tank.       However, the new lines in the photo 427carl posted look nothing like this.

Yes, the 69 style line is very different, not just because it has that extra small line but the routing completely changes when the alternator gets in the way on the newer style mountings.

scan0007.jpgThis is a pic of the car when it was new. Dad was into ham radio and took it with us on our trip from Ont. to Sask. every summer. He ordered the heavy duty charging system to run his power supply (black box pass. side) for his radio when he was on the road. The car had the 325hp 396, turbo 400, 3:23 12 bolt posi, single exhaust.
