That's very kind however I'd feel kind of weird doing this. I'm pretty used to buying my own "toys". I'm going to talk to my accountant to see if perhaps I could claim a partial deduction on it as part of my business (CP is technically a business as I have to claim all donations, sales etc)

Nicely put the logo on the car in a couple places and you should be good for a deduction as you are promoting your website.  Be curious to see what he says.  Good luck with it.

Put me down to match that donation. We need a CP "company car".

Insure it under artisan use, its basically a unheard of policy that insurance companies don't want to sell you. It basically allows you to use your private vehicle for commercial use without paying commercial fees. You can still claim car for business use.

You can count me in on that. This would be a great CP official car and Todd would be a great caretaker.

The seller hasn't answered any of my follow up emails (questions about the interior, paint etc). I might call tomorrow.

I'd put up $100 to see the car go to a good home.

Some things are better left unsaid, but the message still comes across.

interesting...      so you are saying, by not saying, that we should not interfere....

and let Todd wait... until a beautiful 2 door hardtop, shows up with a perfect frame, and body, and nice driveline that he desires  (for about 2000)....

I was hoping he'd have something to play with before he reached 65.....

I get the drift...  I apologize for getting excited about a "old non- desirable 4 door.....  (and my apologizes for those who suffer with a non-hobby 4 door)

I'll send my site support at a later date......

Hey Carl, not to worry, bud.  I always enjoy reading your thoughts - no need to hold them back IMHO.

My thoughts on this car, since I was also looking into it before this thread popped up, is that it seems like a good candidate for a summer driver, but I'd like to see the price lower.

Reasons?

(1) It hasn't been driven for 10 years, so you would have to leave some room for stuff that will probably pop up due to sitting.  Stuff like, gummed up fuel system - probably would need a new tank as the fuel lines would probably keep getting clogged up as "gunk" in the tank gets disturbed during use.  Rubber items, like fuel and brake hoses, suspension bushings, etc. probably will need attention, probably needs new tires,  Etc.

(2) It looks a little more worn than I first thought from reading the ad.  Seats split (you could install covers), driver's seat looks sagged from high mileage, steering wheel would be a pain to drive with those large cracks in it.  All minor stuff in the big picture, but all needing attention.

(3) Surface rust in the trunk probably means that it's leaking around the back window.  "Needs paint" might also mean "needs rust repair".

These are just my thoughts as it pertains to my situation.  Not trying to reflect on anybody else, plus I haven't seen the car in person, so I can't attest as to how rust-free the frame and floors are.

From my contacts with the seller, he seems like a very nice and reasonable guy, so I have no reason to believe that he wouldn't entertain a lower offer should somebody be serious and look at it in person.  I'm very cognitive about all the kijiji crackpots out there wasting peoples' time, so once I decided it was not for me, I let the seller know and passed along what info I had to Todd, for him to make his own decision on it.

It still looks like it could be a nice summer driver, I'm sure the 350 would haul it along nicely, but for me it would require more time to be put into it than I know I am in a position to do at the moment.

It has nothing to do with you Carl, or you doing a good thing by trying to buy a car for Todd ... why are you taking things personally.

Okay I'll say it.biggrin The car may be solid (has that been actually proven?), and it has nothing to do with the 4 door aspect, but it is an ugly car (in my opinion).

I truly appreciate all the kind words and offers of support but quite frankly I am not in any position to give this (or any old car) the love it deserves right now. My garage is too small for it so it would have to sit outside in the damp/salty air. My garage does not have electricity or insulation etc. It's amazing how my yard equipment rusts just sitting in there. Oil drain plugs seize unless I apply anti-seize to them. I hate having to apply oil spray to an old car. I do it to my daily drivers and it sucks working on them. I have two more years of my son's university to worry about and perhaps after that I'll be able to build my dream garage and have my old car(s) again.
I'm likely going to sell my Jeep either this year or next spring. I really need a good full sized truck and would prefer a rust free 1/2 or 3/4 ton Chevy or GMC 4wd from pre-1988. One favor I would like to ask is when I'm ready if folks who live out west could keep an eye out for a clean example. It won't need to be mint, just mechanically sound and solid.

I know where you're coming from, Todd, and respect your decision.

If I could add my 2˘, I don't have a garage and thus any car I have would be parked outside.  I find over here that as long as there isn't salt on the road, the vehicle shouldn't rust much over the summer, even sitting outside.  Typically any old vehicle I had with rust (every one), I've had one Krown or Rust Check treatment done (with instructions to not drill any holes) and have noticed no advancement of the rust over several years.

Just food for thought.
