Newbie Question:

Did a Beaumont have to be an "SD" to get a 396?

Yes. I think 68 and 69 was the only years that all SDs had 396s.

I had a 68 "Deluxe" that had a 327/4speed......I know it came from the factory that way, as I knew the original owner...........Every 68-69 SD, I have seen had the big block....I did have a friend that had SD badges on his 67, that had a 6 in it.............had a nice trim package though.

I think 64 and 65 SD cars all had small blocks. 66 and 67 were small or big block. 68 and 69 were all big blocks. Sound about right, everyone?

When I was a teen, there was a 67 SD in town that was a 283 2 barrel 4 speed. Different. Nice car though.

Carl, I believe everything you said is correct. From what I understand, SD started out as an appearance package on the 67 model but was changed to a performance package later in the production run. All the late 67 SD had 396s. I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe it is correct.

In '64 & 65 they built SD cars with 6 cyl engines. My Beaunont SD is one of only 381 Sport Deluxe cars to leave the factory with a 6 banger. smile Check the GM documentation on my website.

Thanks for the correction. I'm not sure I've ever seen an SD 6 cylinder Beaumont. I know it's common on the Acadians.

jfkheat, i think you are right with the 67's ...i have an early VIN 'sports option' SD 283 2bbl, PG car...

But, i think 69 Laurentian was asking did it have to be an SD to get a 396, and for that the answer (that i believe) is yes. There are NO non SD, 396 cars...

And I should clarify. The 67 Sport Deluxe 283 I have been talking about on here had no SD emblems or stripes, just Sport Deluxe emblems.

That's odd because they normally got one or the other. The stripe cars didn't have quarter panel Sport Deluxe emblems but they had the emblem on the glove box and the trunk. Maybe they ordered the stipe RPO option but specified stripe delete. confused

i agree w/sd 396 ...many never had the stripe option (no sbc cars)... and had all the sport deluxe chome which included glove box, trunk, side louvres, 1/4 panel script and the rocker panel moulding.... if you did have the stripe option, the 1/4 panel script was removed...

I'm sorry, I read what I posted. It came out all wrong.

I was trying to say that nowhere on the car did it say SD like the "SD" on the 396 stripe cars.. It did say Sport Deluxe in all the right places though, trunk, dash, and the Sport Deluxe 1/4 emblems.

For years I have called all Sport Deluxe cars SD cars, but in hindsight, that is misleading. I think that should be reserved for the SD396 cars.

In 1966 the 1697 Beaumont Custom Sprts Coupe and Convertible could be orderd with a "Sports Option" which gave you all vinyl trim, strato bucket seats, center floor console with automatic or 4sp, clock and 3 simulated louvres on rear 1/4 panel. According to the parts book this option was also available with any engine 6 or 8 cyl, although I have never seen a 6 cyl car with this option. The 396 was only available on Custom model with the "Sports Option". The unique thing about this car is that even though it had a "396" it still had a "flat hood". That 1967 brochure was worded "The cool one The one with poise". In the new year (1967) GM introduced the "Sport Deluxe (SD) 396" and if you wanted a 396 it was only available in the Sport Deluxe model and also had the "bump" hood. All other cars were either the custom or just plain beaumont. The brochure for that one was worded "The swinging one. The one with spirit." In 1968 all "SD's" were 396 but for 1969 I'm not sure I would have to Investigate some more. Most of my interest lies in 1967. This is just a quick overview for this topic.

Looking for my original 1967 2 dr custom 327 4sp bench seat car from northern saskatchewan

I see your signature looking for your 67. My friend from Nebraska came up here a few years ago and bought a 67 Custom 327 bench seat 4 speed butternut yellow car. He is currently restoring it. I know it's not your car though, because it was bought new about 30 miles from here, at a dealership that is still in business today. When my friend bought the car and got the GM Canada documents, I called the dealership and talked to the parts manager who I had known for a long time. I asked if he remembered the car (because he has been there since 1965). He said "it's either "Bill Smith's" car or "Bob Jones" car!" He remembered it right away!

The Beaumont SD package could be ordered on any six cylinder or V8 Beaumont Custom coupe or convertible in '66 and early '67. This ment any engine available on the order sheet could be had. So its very possisble to have a '66 Beaumont SD with anything from a 194 ci six cylinder up to the 350 or 360 HP 396 V8 engine (depending on model year). The same was true for the same year of Canadian built Malibu coupes and convertibles.

Also for '66 the 325 HP 396 was an available engine in the Beaumont.

Also the SD package didn't include the doomed hood until mid '67 production. So all '66 and early '67 Beaumont SD's pre December '66 have flat hoods. For '67 there is also another quirk to the Beaumont SD story. Once the Sport Deluxe package was made available you could get the car in two differenet packages

1) a car with the strip package and no emblems in the rear quarter panels

2) a car with the emblems but no stripe package.

So far in over twenty some years I've never seen a documented car that had both packages from the factory. All we need to prove that wrong is a documented car with both packages.

For '69 the SD package was only available on the Beaumont Deluxe, so there's no '69 Beaumont SD convertibles.

Assuming that the GM parts book is correct, you are right that you will never find a stripe car with emblems. When you look up the emblem, it says "except decorator stripes".

So for years you have been right, why would want to change your mind. If it is a Sport Deluxe, than it is an SD.
