RE: Beaumont Registry

I had always thought the big block was available right from the start of production in 66.

Too bad they don't still give the whole page. I can rattle off the VIN of the 3rd 66 car made and it would be fun to have the first page. It was an SD convert, 283 glide with power windows and a tach.

GM Document.jpgDoes my old 396SD look to be a real late production?  It was shipped in July...    wasn't the plant shut down most Augusts' for new vehicles?

Strange-I seem to have deleted that documentation-Andrew did I send it to you ? I'll e-mail Shawn and Helmut too.

I was surprised to see no L34's here too-I've been studying it for a day ! glad someone else noticed too ! I gues L34 736 vin's must have been pretty low production-surprise GM even offered a 738 vin with L35 with that low of demand.

Bottom line here-WHY DOES GEORGE JUST NOT TELL US WHAT MAKES A 736 VIN a SPORT DELUXE and WHAT MAKES A 736 VIN not a SPORT DELUXE-or when it happened-he tells me sometime in mid decembert 1966 they went to 738 vin's-he owned up to documenting at least one 67 Beaumont Custom as a Sport Deluxe 736 vin-anyone here own it ?

Does anyone have the Microphishe sheets for 67 beaumonts build around

March 9 1967
Oct 11, 1966
Nov 2, 1966

I own cars build on those dates, but never got GM docs.  Would be interesting to see if my car is on them.

I have just noticed this forum and find it interesting so far, but would like to voice a few concerns. I have a problem with someone using my name ( George Zapora ) or my co-worker ( Frank Agueci ) as a reference to obtain vehicle information from its members. While Vintage Vehicle Services is the sole authorized source for General Motors vehicle documentation, we do not believe in outside sources, especially private individuals, forming data bases of other people's car VIN numbers and 'storing' them. Before 1994 General Motors used to send out copies of the shipping microfilm, but realized that this included key code information, so this practice was stopped in 1994. We see no reason at all why someone would want to keep key code records of other peoples cars aside from the manufacturer of that vehicle, who can provide it through secure channels ( a GM dealer parts dept ) to the rightful owner if the keys are lost. As far as VIN number records and their build information, through the years that I have spent documenting cars here I have run in to a novel process called 'cloning'. A person takes a known good serial number of a rare vehicle and 'restores' another car to be identical to it, then re-vins that restored car to now be the rare one. There are cases of the same VIN being registered as far away as Dubai and Quebec, or Sweden and Hawaii. So I have no idea why anyone would want to give out their VIN number to someone on the internet so they can keep it on a data base. I strongly recommend that people cover their VIN numbers with a business card or so when at car shows, as anyone could take down that number, cut and paste it on a photo copy of a vehicle ownership/registration, and apply for your key codes to steal that vehicle. The only time I would give out a VIN number of my car was if I was selling it, as the prospective purchaser would have to do verifications at that point. This is just a heads up to your members. And just because we meet someone at a car show does not mean that we can vouch for that persons credibility, that usually only comes from long years of friendship. I have even told the person involved that I did not agree with what he was doing when he was in Oshawa at a car show. Sorry for venting, but did not appreciate our names being used by someone for their own gain. If you would like information on your car, we now have a website up a www.vintagevehicleservices.com. Thank you for allowing me on your forum. George Zapora

George

I want to welcome you here.

We very much appreciate what Vintage does for us. We certainly don't want to ruin that option for documenting our cars. I just want to make sure that you understand that speaking for myself at least, the only reason I would keep VIN's, build dates etc is to try to unlock some of the secrets about these great cars from years past. By sharing this info with each other we are all learning.

As a specific example, I have a great interest in figuring out when the 736 SD cars became 738 SD cars in 67. With enough help here we should be able to narrow that date down to a small time frame.

And I should add I still believe that the more info the genuine car enthusiasts  have at their fingertips, the  less chance the cloners have.

A good example is the Supercar forum. You'd be hard pressed to get a cloned car past that group.

The VIN number is not the only means of identification. What about the body stamp number that cannot be seen under the paint work? Dates on some of the gauges/etc? The real enthusiast will not be fooled!

Carl S., sorry no offence to you or the website, I just did not appreciate our names being used by another person to gain credibility. I think for your own use you should store data by model rather than vin, it would be a lot safer for all members involved. A VIN is like your SIN number, why does anyone need to know it? Stolen SIN numbers are used for identity theft, stolen VIN numbers are used for...
As far as when in 1967 the A51 Sports Option became a separate model, we always must hold something back to be able to verify if a cloning question occurs.
Like you said it is good to have info out there for everyone, but find a safe way of doing it, by model, rather than by VIN, if it is a public site.
We will always help with your individual VIN searches, and look forward to helping you in the future.
Kindest regards, George

Welcome to the site George. I think most of us agree that posting VIN's on here or storing them in any database is just asking for trouble. Most of us are primarily interested in production numbers by model number which can be found in the threads sticky'd in the Beaumont and full size Pontiac forums.

A key point concerning the 736 (& Chevelle 136) Sport Deluxe (& Malibu SS) vs. just a Custom (or Malibu) with buckets is the presence of D55 on the firewall trim tag. The console was part of the Sports Option and was included in all cars unless a 3-speed column shift was on the car. In other words up to that point there was no such thing as a D55 console option, since that item was grouped with the A51 Sports Option.
Once a documented 735 or 736 car shows up with D55 on the trim tag, that is a sure sign that the car is a Custom with buckets and console, and not a Sport Deluxe.

Once the 738-series Sport Deluxe made it to production, the A51 Sports Option was simultaneously dropped. At that time the 738 cars now had big-block hoods, had bench seats standard and could be optionally ordered with A51 buckets. D55 was now a separate option to order or leave off if you wished. Same goes for the 735/736 Custom series at that time in that you could now order A51 buckets and your car stayed with the Custom trim (no more Sport Deluxe trim). Consoles were now a separate option and would be coded as such on the trim tag (i.e. D55)

Earlier 736 Sport Deluxes did not use the big block hoods, even if a 396 was under the hood.

The Monthly Listing of Vehicles Shipped that is posted for the December 15th / 16th timeframe is quite interesting. I have one for Chevelles from the very same production window, Dec. 15th / 16th. My Chevelle was built & shipped on December 15th, 1966, using an engine from St. Catherines built December 12th. It appears that different engines and engine codes were built in batches. On the Beaumont list and on my Chevelle list, all the CQ engines were produced in the same batch, all the CC, DE, DB etc appear the same. The DE code was for the 283 Powerglide engine and was very popular. A less popular code was the DB code, which is for a 283 with a 10.4 clutch (4-speed only). On both the Beaumont & Chevelle lists, those engines were produced on 11-25-66.

I dont see the lack of 736-cars with L34s as indicating a late phase-in of that option, rather I see it as testimony to how rare they were. Bear in mind that on these older GM reports that we were only looking at a small sample of cars. Sometimes certain cars or option might have been built in batches or at least in a small window. Knowing how rare the Canadian L-79 Chevy IIs are, I have seen a list that showed 6 of them built within a 20 car spread.

My understanding is that The Sports Option wrapped up around mid to late November, but also could have run as late as early December.

I met a guy at the GM Autofest show back in 2001 that brought his 1967 Malibu SS with him. He is the original owner, and ordered it new (NICE!). His car was built mid-November. It was Madera Maroon with a black vinyl roof cover, black interior, an L30 327 and an M20 (Saginaw) 4-speed, a 3.07:1 12-bolt Positraction rear, power steering and power disk brakes. He ordered the car with 7.75-14 tires and as such it would have originally used the 14x5 Rally Wheels (he stored the 14x5 wheels and has 14x6 on it presently). One thing he said was that he and several friends ordered similar cars back then. Some were Malibu SS and some later ones were Malibu.

Great topic, but as was mentioned we should tread carefully!

P.S., I sent a copy of my listing to Dave Weir back in 1996. To my knowledge he has never actually posted it, merely he has noted production statistics and trends without specifically singling out any serial numbers (good work Dave!)

see, and you guys got all up in arms when I said I wouldnt join a registry. George explain it thoroughly, the same crap has been going on for years. I agree with some sort of registration or club for the cars, except the VIN numbers, if the registry is ever closed, or guy who has everyones info, decides, Im not doing this anymore. Then what happens to the info, private info. I would love the cars to be in some sort of registry, but without VINs. even releasing the build date could be disasterous. Im sure, my red car is the last 65 of its configuration to come off the line. would be nice to document and prove, its VIN is up there.

Exactly,  The cool stuff is in the production totals, option codes, color combos(canadian cars always had strange 2tones), the different decals on Cdn cars, etc, etc.  That is the REAL historical stuff.

I want to clarifyhow I enjoy/handle documentation---

Some of you know I've mentioned I've collected VIN's and build dates for US built 67 Nova's. Here is how I've done it.

I have put out a request for people to send me the last 6 of their VIN. I have asked them to make the last 2 digits XX rather than the actual digits. By doing this, I make them feel secure in knowing I don't have their VIN and there would be 99 choices. Also, I have no idea if it is a 2 dr, 4 dr, wagon, whatever. Also I ask for the build date off the cowl tag. I put the build date and VIN in columns in order. I've had guys send me the whole VIN and build date. I copy the last 6 digits of the VIN onto the sheet (with the last 2 as XX) and destroy the VIN records they have sent me.

When I see a high dollar car for sale, ebay or wherever, I check the build date against the VIN. I am not at this every day. I do it when I have time. So far I have caught 2 bogus higher end 67 SS cars that have a VIN and build date that could not possibly be correct.

I see nothing wrong with this practice. It's for my own interest/curiosity and I've had guys contact me to check my list to see if the car they are looking at makes sense.

Are you saying that a 738 SD could be ordered with A51 buckets but no console? Would that mean you could own a 67 SD 396 4 speed bucket seat car with no console? I have never heard of such a thing but I have said many times, never say never!

Thank you very much for your input on these cars.

I still dont buy the concept that keeping the date of change from 736 sports option to 738 SD is some sort of way to keep cloners out of the market... feel free to expand on that thought George. If someone were to clone an SD either 736 or 738 one would stay away from the transition time (why try to clone a first week of december 738 car when one could clone any of the many built after xmas) and realistically the one who is collecting vin's and production pages is in the best position to produce 'defensible' clones based on the research that they have collected over many decades...so the concern is understandable...

Also George, out of interest do you have a production figure for 1967, Sport Option cars?

thanks for your efforts,
andrew
