Pontiac stories


A while back, someone mentioned writing Pontiac stories. One comes to mind.....

   It was about 1980, I was about 22. I had a 66 Grande Parisienne (not the one I was searching for on here recently). I put a 427/TH400 into it from a 68 Impala. In our small town, we cruised main street a lot, about a mile long. One night on one of my laps, I took a side trip off the main drag, going west 1 block, then north one block, then east one block back to main street. As I turned off main to go west, I noticed a car parked on the wrong side of the side street. Just someone talking to their buddies on the sidewalk, no big deal. I continued on around the block. Unknown to me, a police car was moments behind me and stopped to talk to the driver of the car who was parked facing the wrong way.

I pulled up to the sign at main, and headed south, right back past the street I had just been down. Of course, I did this full throttle, sideways, and letting the TH400 screech hard into second gear to boot!

Needless to say, I think I impressed the officer.... I lived only about 5 blocks away so hightailed home, parked the car at my house, jumped out and ran. I knew not to go into the house where he could find me, but travelled through neighbours yards hiding in shrubs etc. Within a minute or so, a marked car was scouring the area for me! They never found me, and I didn't move my car for a week.

Close call..........

I have a 1972 Pontiac Ventura II 307 3 speed.. I install a muncie 4 speed and a Quad carb ..Car works great.. Was working part time in tire shop , so decided to install headers.. Friday night late, headers are on . no time for exhaust, but have to test drive... I drive out # 8 highway towards Goderich.. I turn arond and stop  1ST GEAR 2,3,4 TH!!  car is an animal! love it!   I idle into town,and see Police car at grocery store.. Sgt is standing on door sill, shaking his fist at me ,and smiling!!  Sat night , install turbo mufflers, and car is amazing for a 307..Lock up the shop- its 12 oclock, race through town, go to end of town, run up through gears!  idle into town, turn right at first corner ,drive to my house.. shut off car ,look in mirrior !!  two town cops nosed up to my bumper!!  Carl, what are you doing ??  nothing ..   keep the noise down, and slow down !they say and leave.    love small towns...

LOL!! Great story.

I grew up in Goderich, well just north of Goderich in Dungannon. We used to get away with a lot in those days. Wouldn't even think about it today.

I used to have a '66 Bel Air 4-door. It had a six, but it was so anemic it couldn't get out of it's own way. So I yanked the 283 out of my dad's '66 Parisienne, that by then was so rusted that there was no hope of fixing it. I put on a couple of short pipes, then bolted a coule of Walker Royal Scots to them. I kept knocking them off, and often just ran the straight pipes.

One day I came home and the cops were waiting for me. Pulled me over and waived one of those pink slips in front of me to go to the safety lanes that were coming to town. Remember those? I talked him out of it in the promise that I would fix the exhaust. I went home and bolted on the y-pipe and muffler that was on the Parisienne and that was that.

one of the few times i saw my dad swear was, it was in the late 70's and we were traveling on hiway 7 between kaladar and perth in the winter. Somehow dad caught the edge of the road with the 67 beaumont wagon and we went up on 2 wheels. not sure how far we went but somehow dad got it back down and we carried on our merry way. he finally said holy $#*% i don't think we should tell mom about that one. we never did.

Wow, Mike, I used to have a 66 4 dr Belair w/6cyl, bought it from my brother.
I swapped out the 6 for a tired 283. Should have kept the 6cl, better gas mileage and more power than the tired 283. But I was young and foolish, spent a couple/few hundred bucks on custom duel exhaust, sounded real nice at idle, but you knew there wasn't anything to back it up.
Anyways, I ended up pulling the exhaust and some other stuff from the 66 Belair for my 66 GP.
What a flood of memories when i read your post.

Had the 66 since about 83 and the 65 since 88.
Both still require a lot of work.

The original owner of my GP lived on the edge of town on a farm, right along the main highway. One night, very late I was out on the highway doing burnouts etc where I figured I was not bothering anyone. As I headed back into town, I met a marked car and it took him a bit to get turned around to come after me. I was close to the original owners yard, so I went ripping in there and parked the car, lights out and bolted. I knew the farmer on a casual basis and was planning my story if he happened to notice someone out in his yard at about 2 AM, but fortunately the police car never found me and I don't think the farmer noticed me.

I wasn't the most careful guy when I did stupid stuff in my car. Many times I escaped tickets because of luck, not brains!!!
