Brake Caliper Removal


Started out to change the front brakes on the LeMans. Pasenger side went well and relined using Monroe pads, Not sure when brakes were done before but the caliper bolts didn't put up too much fuss so I was happy.

Went to driver side. The second I put the ratchet on the caliper bolt I knew the head was chewed up, slight pressure and sure enough it was. Tried the other one and the same thing.

Any suggestions on how I'm going to get these out, I'm thinking heat and vice grips. Any help will be appreciated. For now I had a fantasic set of brakes on the passenger side and paper thin with the audilble wear sensor screaching on the left.

I think vice grip and heat is good too. If not, how about welding the hex bit (3/8" on there?) right onto/into the bolt? That makes some heat in the bolt as well as giving the hex something to grab on to.

Thanks C1, I like your welding into the hex head idea, I also have a set of Craftsman damaged bolt removers, never used them but may try them as well. I usually get 65Camino involved in problems like this, C2.

I got a good mechanic friend who helps me out with situations like this. His nickname is Tiny! He looks like a pro wrestler. Great for those stubborn bolts! In fact, Tiny has just opened his own shop here in Ingersoll. If you are in the area and need the services of an "old school" mechanic, look him up.

They're out, just working on getting new bolts. Heat and snap on extractor tool. One was completed rounded off, so someone was there before me.

Update: Got the right bolts, hee haw I got brakes again! Time for some brake stands....

 Somehow a Maltese cross just doesn't seem to go along with what is described as "Family Friendly Service, lol!
