My commute is 75k. Luckily both our 05 Matrix and my beater S10 are paid for so it's just fuel and maintenance costs..

Can someone please explain how gas prices in Niagara Falls, NY are the equivalent of $1.05 per litre and their prices did not go up 10% overnight, even though this part of North America all gets it gas from the same refineries?furious

This blatant manipulation of the market by the oil oligopoly here in Canada is going to drive me to support a Hugo Chavez type candidate....

$1.28 here on PEI.

http://www.peigasprices.com/

We have IRAC here which operates separately from the rest of Canada.

http://www.irac.pe.ca/petrol/

I own a gas sucking 2006 GMC reg. cab, long box for hauling junk, and 2002 Toyota Camry gas miser for hauling me.
I drive 45 min. to work and 45 min. back to home at 80 kph and using no brakessmile (there is hardly any traffic on PEI, except for in the tourist season). I don't go through a lot of gas. My wife car pools with me.

Today in Timmins regular $143.9  yesterday it was $133.9  I should of filled up yesterday.  My daily driver is a 1998 GMC regular cab long box pickup. with a 4.3 V6 and 3:42 rear axle. It is the best truck I have ever owned for fuel economy. We use this truck for cottage runs and at the cottage for clearing brush and lake weeds and any other projects we have on the go. This truck is used in summer only and in the winter my driver will be a 1996 Chevy 4x4 5.7 with 3:42 rear gears. My wifes year round driver is a 2000 Silverado regular cab ,short box, Z71 4x4 with 3:73 gears. This truck with a 5.3 is getting 27 mpg with her daily commute back and forth to work of 40 miles.  Living in the North we consitantly pay more for fuel but on average drive less than our Southern Ontario friends.

This could be nasty. Hurricane IKE is projected to come on shore with a 20-25 foot storm surge. Computer models showed Galveston 95% under water with just a 15 foot surge. The U.S largest gas refinery isn't far from there and worse case 1/3 of the U.S refining ability will be shut down. Things could get pricey. Anyone see the size of this hurricane? 900 miles across!

Yeah, I saw that too.  The Texas coast is going to experience it's own Tsunami!  They have already postponed the two Astros games this weekend.  They have also posted a warning saying that anyone who stays in a single family residence structure along the coast will "basically be killed".

From AP:

"The National Weather Service warned residents of smaller structures on Galveston they could face certain death if they ignored an order to evacuate; most had complied."

"Ike is so big, it could inflict a punishing blow even in those areas that do not get a direct hit. Forecasters warned because of Ikes size and the shallow Texas coastal waters, it could produce a surge, or wall of water, 20 feet high, and waves of perhaps 50 feet. It could also dump 10 inches or more of rain."

"The oil and gas industry was closely watching the storm because it was headed straight for the nations biggest complex of refineries and petrochemical plants. The upper Texas coast accounts for one-fifth of U.S. refining capacity."

"Its a big storm, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said. I cannot overemphasize the danger that is facing us. Its going to do some substantial damage. Its going to knock out power. Its going to cause massive flooding."

I remember seeing early models showing it tracking all the way to the great lakes. We may see some heavy rain if it stays on this course. Remember hurricane Hazel (before my time)? Anyone remember where it tracked from?

Here in Southwestern Ontario right now there is a rainfall warning in effect for Elgin, London and Middlesex. Tomorrow we could see upwards of 40 to 50mm of rain in these areas. Watch there be a reason for this to cause a jump in gas prices!

Re US vs. Canada cost: have you checked the relative tax take? I don't know what it is but I suspect the taxes in Canada when you figure in provincial & federal, are higher than in the US.

But would they account for almost $1.20 per US gallon?

McTeague says another 1.8 cents by midnight, apparently the Gulf production is shutting down as evacuation orders are issued. As Todd already posted they are reporting now that Galveston will be 20 feet under water and predicting huge property losses in Houston business district. Looks a lot like Toronto with all the office towers there, fourth largest City in the USA.

AS McTeague said, Category 2 hurricane = Category 5 gouging by oil companies.

I have friend who lives in Houston (suburbs).  Fortunately he is on high ground and not in an evacuation area.  I emailed him this afternoon.  He says about 1/2 the city has left and the other 1/2 is going to try and ride it out.  The last big storm they had in 05 (Rita) resulted in traffic chaos as they tried to evacuate everyone at the same time; the roads were all parking lots.  This time they got everyone out of Galveston yesterday, the low lying areas of Houston today and anyone else north of the city better high tail it out of there tonight.  He is expecting to lose power some time tonight/tomorrow morning so it may be a few days before I hear from him again.  Just think about it, 10 inches of rain would be equivalent to 100 inches of snow!  His last words were: " I sure wish I was in Toronto right now".
