How to Avoid the $60 Miller Tax

This applies to Toronto residents only for now. I found a way to avoid the Miller Car Tax today. No way around paying the $60 for the 3 regularly use cars but on the Pontiac I inquired about Historical Plates.

The CSR at the license office didn't know so we put through a mock transaction on the current plate and the tax was added. cry   Next we did one assuming the Pontiac had Historical Plates and BINGO no Miller Car Tax added!

I changed the ownership, got new plates and 15 months renewal sticker for $42.50 !  w00t.gif

The declaration required is fairly easy to comply with since most of us already use our cars in that manner. The car must be 30 years old, used for exhibitions or parades and driven on the highways to get there and also permitted to drive it for road testing purposes and sale purposes.

I'll take $42.50 over $134 any day. smile Plus you'll get the satisfaction of putting one to Mayor Miller.  thumbsup.gif

What is the Millers Tax? I never heard of it before. Also if you get historical plates, are you allowed to go to the cruise nights (do those count under their rules)?

It's a local Toronto thing. I've contemplated changing my vehicle over but I didn't want to lose my personalized plates.

Mayor Miller of Toronto has instituted a $60 car tax for anyone who owns and registers a car in Toronto. The $60 is collected by the Provincial Treasurer at the time you renew your license plates each year and sent to Toronto.

The tax will go towards creating more bicycle lanes and creating grid lock in Toronto.

The declaration I signed for the Historical Plates is as I wrote above. My interpretation of a "Crusie In" is that it is an "Exhibition" so therefore one would be in compliance.

I asked the CSR who enforcers the Historical Plate regulations. She did not know but assumed the local police.

Personally I drive my old car about 300 to 500 miles per year going to and from Crusie Ins so I am not in the least but worried.

I did forget to mention that there is another piece to the declaration indicating  that the car is substantially unchanged from its original manufacture condition. In that case not everyone could qualify. Examples might be the Lead Sleds, Rat Rods or Duce Coupe hot rods. Just my opinion.

i don't want to start any rumours but there is a cruise going on somewhere everyday in the summer in ontario . i had asked my insurance company about the plates before reference the mileage and their issue was driving to work and the secure parking (ie gararge kept) so they upped my mileage and i kept the historic plates. i think the major issue is letting your insurance company know what your up.

Good advice Steve, I called Tony Lant when I got the offer to put the car in the SPIKE TV commercial. He was cool about that especially since the car would be out of my sight for two days, "no problem he said go ahead, it's covered" so a call is probably in order again.
