Body and Paint Codes

I have a 1956 Canadian Pontiac, a work in process smile.gif which has the following codes on the cowl tag:
BODY 2251
STYLE 2211
PAINT 2004

Originally I asked for help here decoding these. Well, now I have browsed other posts here and based on the information given, here's what my car started as:

BODY 2251 = 2251st of that model built in 56

STYLE 2211 = Model: Pathfinder 2-door sedan

PAINT 2004 = Sherwood Green Metallic

Thanks Guys!

Dave

P.S. can you guess where I found the original color paint?

Cool. I am going to have a look tomorrow for mine. Where did you find this decoder ring:)
Where is that photo of the original paint?
Nice car.

Dave,
Can you decode for me? I have this under another post for 69laurentian too. Who is fastest?

Trim: 605
Paint: 452
Body Serial: 7083

Here's what I know:
1954 fourdoor Canadian Pontiac, flat6
Here's what I think:
Chieftain (or Pathfinder?), 239 ci, originally red.

Thanks,

Cody

I think this is a hands down win for our moderator, 69laurentian, because I got my information from him smile.gif in some of his other posts -- except for the paint code, which I got from a Canadian Chevy website:

http://www.classicbowtie.com/1955-1957%20Chevrolet%20Canadian%20Cowl%20Tag%20Information.htm

plus of course information again from 69laurentian that the Pontiac codes are same as Chevrolet but first digit is a 2 instad of a 1.

Sorry to say the Chevy site does not go back to 1954, the oldest is 1955

Here are the Canadian Chevrolet paint codes for 1955 and 1956:

1955 Chevrolet paint codes

55A - Shoreline Beige
55J - Cashmere Blue
514 - Shoreline Beige
550 - Black
551 - Lancer Blue Metallic
552 - Empress Maroon * Cody, since it seems the Pontiacs used similar codes with a different first digit, if 1954 colors were similar to 1955, maybe this is yours? *
553 - Oxford Grey Metallic
554 - Highland Green Metallic
555 - Sunsand Beige
556 - Lido Green
557 - Malibu Blue
558 - Greystone White
559 - Autumn Bronze Metallic
560 - Matador Red
561 - Regal Turquoise Metallic

============================

1956 Chevrolet paint codes

1001 - Black
1002 - Harbour Blue Metallic
1003 - Dusk Plum Metallic
1004 - Sherwood Green Metallic
1005 - Pinecrest Green
1006 - Nassau Blue
1007 - India Ivory
1008 - Crocus Yellow
1009 - Gypsy Red
1010 - Twilight Turquoise
1021 - Dawn Grey Metallic

Sorry I can't help with your 1954 -- but I have to say I always loved that grille on the 54 Pontiacs!

And I am not telling where my real paint showed up, it is a brain teaser smile.gif

Dave

There is an error in the paint codes for the 55 Chevrolet and Canadian Pontiacs.

55A is two tone Navajo Tan with a Greystone White (Chevrolet name India Ivory) roof only. In Canada for 1955  all two tone paint codes were for the roof only for Canadian Pontiacs. If the trunk lid and rear quarters were painted roof colour the paint code is followed by an S which indicated Special Order. This paint combination was available only for the Convertibles and the two door sport coupe according to the Paint and Fabric selector although I have seen and decoded 4 door sedan Laurentians with this combination and the letter S following the paint code numbers.  There is also a 55K paint code that was used and it is Elm Green. This appears to be another special order for the Ontario Government for Department of Lands and Forest vehicles.

How far are you from Fort Lauderdale. My wife and I usually vacation in that area in Feb.    Al

Glad you could provide more info about the paint codes!

I'm in Fort Myers, on the other coast, about a 2-hour drive on I-75. I have to warn you, that's about the time I am planning to install the 496 so if you come visit I will put you to work biggrin.

We have a winner!!! biggrin

I removed the original non-functioning vacuum-operated wiper motor (which I am replacing with a Raingear system) and underneath the original wiper motor - voila! The unmolested-for-over-50-years original paint color! smile

OH YEAH, OH YEAH, WHO'S THE MAN??????!!!!!!

The clue was the mounting spots. They just had that look about them.

And the prize is...........?

And by the way, that is a nice color for that style of Pontiac.

Thanks.
I am going to yank my wiper motor (needs work anyways) and see if that reddish colour everywhere else is under there too.
Anybody have any resources for 1954 and older? Would a paint sheet from ebay have the numbers?
How about the repair manual/service manual (I have a line on a Canadian -specific document).
Glad to see all the life on this forum.
Cheers,
Cody

Do any auto paint suppliers, have a machine, to match paint on a car. Home Depot advertises one to match household paints,  why not cars?   I took a piece of my car, to Car Quest and they did a color match, but from paint chip/samples they had.

I took the metal trim piece screwed to the dash above my ashtray to Carquest and they scanned it. I now have a can of perfect match medium green. I didn't tell him what it was from or what the name of the colour was but my can says "Closest Match: GM Medium Green". I'm impressed!

I sent my Acadian gas cap to a body shop supply place in Winnipeg when I was repainting my firewall. Very nice match. I now have Porsche parts (paint) on my Acadian. I don't know if that's good or bad, but it did the trick!

Yes those mounting holes are distinctive smile.gif

And the prize is = a complete set of brand new upper and lower control arm bumpers for a 55-57 Canadian Pontiac (pictures below), for the price of mailing. These cost $30 USD plus shipping from Eckler's (the Canadian Pontiac suspension for those years is identical to American Chevrolet). I suspect I can mail them reasonably cheaply to Canada, maybe $5? Yes Carl I know you don't currently have a car of that vintage, but if you know someone who can use them, or think you might use them in the future, I have a spare set I'm willing to part with.  Just let me know.

And I agree with you on the color (just like Marina Blue looks so good on the 66-67 Beaumonts), but I am dead set on primer black for my old hot rod smile.gif

I can use the new bumpers for the 55 Pathfinder stationwagon I'll be working on this winter. I have been collecting parts for a couple of years now, the latest purchase was at CARS in Michigian in June and I forgot to get the bumpers. I bought a disc brake kit, polyurethane bushing kit and some other parts for a total bill of $2300  US. I will gladly pay for shipping.

The 261 you have can probably be sold in Florida. A lot of guys doing pre 55 cars like to use a 261 instead of the 235 and the 216.5 original engines. The complete engine should sell for $300-500. The guys in the know can id the 261 by the two captains bars above the starter and the W before the engine serial number.   Al

Oh great, now I have to go out and buy the 55 I've always wanted!

Sounds like you found your guy in Al. He can just mail the cheque to me!!!

Good deal, everyone wins on this one.

Gee that's a lot of money for brakes and bushings. I found a source (that other companies use) and set myself up as a shop so I get wholesale prices, I got a complete (and I do mean complete -- Full Size Chevy 1955-57 Complete 2" Drop Kit Includes 11" Rotors, Loaded Large GM Calipers, 2" Drop Spindles, Hoses with Banjo Bolts, Vacuum Hose with Intake Manifold Fittings, Bearings, Seals, Dust Caps, Spindle Nuts, Spindle Washers, all Hardware, Cast Iron Master Cylinder, Brass Proportioning Valve Kit and a Power Brake Booster -- you can specify size of booster, I chose 7" dual diaphragm for big-block clearance -- see picture below) for under $500 including shipping (over 100 pounds ain't cheap). Anyone needs some, let me know, I'll see if they will drop ship for me.

Al, e-mail me your address and I'll send you the bumpers, you can send me a check for the postage when I mail them, if you want to do something for Carl that's great. Eckler's sent me these by mistake and didn't want to pay the postage for me to return them, so I am happy to pass them on to someone who can use them.

About my 261 --  I did discover the information about the captains bars and a picture of mine is shown below. The more I think about it, the more I think I am going to hang on to it for a future project, but I do appreciate your informtaion about the 261.

Dave

I got a lot more parts for the 55 than just brakes and bushings. The brake kit was $625.00 and it is complete but standard height. This was a good price as compared to a couple of years ago when they were $1095 in Canada. Our dollar was just about par with the US dollar when I made my purchase.I'll email you my address. If you need any trim parts or oddball stuff for your 56 let me know as I have 2 1955 Canadian Pontiac parts cars. I knew the answer of your picture question but I wanted to see who else would answer. I am going with an original 2 speed electric wiper motor in the wagon as I had one in my parts stash for a few years.  Thanks for the bushings. I'll have to find something for Carl for one of his cars.   Al

No, you don't have to find me something. I hope you are kidding but I wanted to post this just in case you weren't!

I have seen more people get help like this on here than on any other forum I've been a part of.

Keep it up you guys!
