This is a little premature, but planning ahead might pay off.
My 1956 Canadian Pontiac has the 261 cubic inch OHV 6 that runs just fine. I have my heart set on installing a big-block (496 Chevy) so I will end up with a good complete motor, from carb to pan, with operating generator, voltage regulator, starter, etc., so if anyone can use one and is willing to deal with the distance involved (I live in Southwest Florida, a heck of a long way from anywhere in Canada), let me know and we'll see if we can work something out. Won't be until near the end of this year at the earliest that I will pull the 6 from my car. If you want to come hear it run (and even drive it) then we'll pull it out together (I have an engine hoist and everything else we'll need) that would be great. I hate to send this fine original motor off to the scrap yard.
A picture is shown below (I couldn't resist adding a little chrome dress-up - I do not have original air cleaner but I do have the original valve cover and breather/oil cap). I haven't driven it much yet (from the transporter to my garage) but I will be running it more when I finish the brakes and some other changes. I'll check for any problems but in a short test there was no oil smoke and there are no drippings on my garage floor
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I browsed parts for sale and 99% of what I saw was mid 60's stuff, nothing like this, so I put it here.
A lot of us love those 261 sixes, many say faster than a comparably equipped 265 or 283 small block car.
Now, the real question is how did that Bad A$s Black Canadian Beast get to FLA ?
I am ashamd to say that I didn't know until recently that I had this motor in the car, I wrongly assumed it was the Chevy 235. If I hadn't already bought all the parts for the 496 (short block with stout forged innards, aluminum heads, roller cam, custom-fit headers and oil pan, etc. etc. etc.) I'd soup up the 261 - triple carbs, headers with dual exhaust, 3/4 race cam, etc. - the knowledge and parts still exist and it would be pretty cool - maybe I'll save the 261 for a future project? I'll certainly pay more attention to how the 6 performs once the brakes etc. are done and it's rolling under power again (hopefully by the end of this month).
How it got here in Florida? On a transporter from Southern California!!!
I bought it on eBay and had it shipped. I wanted a project car and when I found out I could use Chevy chassis parts (readily available and reasonbly priced) I made sure I was high bidder. How it came to be in SoCal I do not know (I bought it from a dealer/broker) nor do I know any other history, but this old car has sure been around
I suspect it took a side trip to Tiujana from SoCal because it has a custom tuck-and-roll silver and black interior (see picture below - sorry about the crummy-looking steering column, I have that all pulled to restore, it'll be black when it goes back in). I think the upholstery nicely matches the stainless steel streaks on the hood and the little chrome streaks above the taillights, and I'm going to keep all that. Lower part of the dash will be painted silver too (upper part, after dent repair, will remain black).
You can get some basic build data from GM Canada if you like, all they need is the serial number. You can find out when it was made and the original selling dealer if you are lucky and any other informatiion they have archived.

Yes, "the original selling dealer if you are lucky".
