NASCAR hit by economic turmoil

There is a story in the Globe this morning about big corporate sponsorships being pulled and thinning out teams for NASCAR's next season. Among the sponsor casulaties named are Dale Jr. - AMP and Michael Waltrip - NAPA. I guess these big companies can find better things to do with $25,000,000 a year, the amount quoted as a NASCAR sponsorship. Yikes!

I don't think NASCAR can keep up the popularity it has had since "Days of Blunder". If all the multi car teams leave or fold I would probably start watching again. Maybe guys like Junior Johnson would come back with a single car team. Too much money aka. corporate sponsorship changed the whole deal. It's too sanitized for me anymore.

It's really hard to follow when the "stock cars" are nothing but fiberglass bodies of front wheel drive 4 door sedan models grafted onto hand built racing chassis.  I totally lost interest after they went to the "car of tomorrow" bodies.  They all look the same now except for the decals.

It's ridiculous, they have cars for each track, not a car for every track. I can see 2 cars in a team, i still remember the Junior Johnson Bud cars in the 80's. I read a story about F1 going to look over cutting costs. The teams spent something like 1.8 billion this year!

Try and find anything out about the "cars" it about the drivers, not cars. There is even speculation that they will shift to a single car platform then the makes would be meaningless. Meaningless to me now, just thought the story was interesting in view of economic woes that NASCAR is the first one hit by big sponsors.

You could see this coming by the number of races that were not sold out this season. I used to watch Nascar all the time but since the COT car the only two races I won't miss are the first and last of the season. That is party time around here.  Albiggrin

Most of the guys I know have lost interest. Maybe we are all too old. I went to Daytona a few times in the early 80's. It was still kinda down south good ole boy racing then. We used to go to New Symrna Raceway also and watch lots of Canadians battle it out with the Nascar boys.
By 1990 it got too crowded, and too hard to get tickets, but still fun. 2 years later it was out of hand and I never went back to Speed Week since. The old hard cores kinda got left out when corporate America got involved.

I'm more interested in seeing the tracks and finding out how big they really are. The racing bores me.

F1 lost it as well...

I agree.
As far as F1 is concerned it's a parade.

I honestly haven't been able to get interested in Nascar since they stopped running real cars. I liked it back in the old days when the rides were modified factory pieces, not hand built look alike plastic bodies on tube frames. The only upside might be that todays's purpose built cars are probably safer, but where's the excitement? None for me - but i know lots of people love it.

When Nascar & F1 are affected you know something big is going on. I think we are going to see some significant economic adjustments over the coming months and years.

I admit that at NASCAR with all this talk about money put aside, is more exciting than many other auto sports. I'm an F1 fan, went and saw the French GP last year and have to admit that it can be very boring. THe cars are built in a way that discourages from any racing/passing to happen. With all the aerodynamic features you get to close to the car ahead and you get all that dirty air, no way you can pass. It was nice to see a bit of competition from more than just 1 or 2 teams. Overall though it's not like the old days. The most exciting race i felt was Montreal, and now it could be gone for next year. The tracks are dull. Safe yes, but dull. I could really go on but i think you get the idea. Point is in NASCAR there is still racing...and boxing...well at least a good punch here and there...or a guy getting pulled out of his truck.
