Canadian Pontiac's at POCI

I was at Spearfish SD in July for POCI's 2008 convention.  As in other years, there were only a few Canadian Pontiacs.  I was there with my 70 2+2 convertible, a gent from Saskatoon with a 55 or 56 4 dr Laurentian, and a gent from the USA with a 58 Parisienne convertible.  The 58 had been upgraded from it's 283 to a 348 tri-power.  I volunteered to be a judge this year in the "Points Judged" category, and assisted in judging the 58.  My knowledge of Canadian cars helped save him a point when the other judges were going to dock him for not having LOF glass.  That wasn't used on the Canadian cars until the mid 60's.

As usual, I got white a few "What the $%+@ is that?" from the USA crowd when they saw the Chev engine under my hood.  There was a handful of other Canadian participants at the show, including as usual John Preikschat from Regina.  Unfortunately, Big John doesn't bring his fully loaded 70 2+2 454 hartop anymore.  I haven't seen the car since Red Wing in 2001, but it's definately seen better days.  Next years show is Dayton OH being held in conjuction with the GTOAA show.  That's closer for the folks in Ontario, and hope you take the opportunity to show the other Pontiac owners some of the intracies of our Canadian built cars.

I am due for another POCI convention but I'm not sure my Acadian will be ready by then. Too many irons in the fire right now.

I have had a lot of fun with our Pontiacs at POCI over the years.

Good to hear John is still going. Does he not bring a car at all?

There are few people as dedicated as John when it comes to Canadian Pontiacs. Does he know of this forum? I haven't seen him on here.

I think it still has that issue or some cooling system malady. If we all bug him enough maybe, just maybe. I even volunteer time and I even volunteer 65Camino's time too.

Big John drove a Pontiac Vibe this year, and took a trophy in his class.  He was 2 or 3 cars ahead of me at tech, and had to run to the local Wal-Mart for a fire extinguisher.  This year they moved up from a 5 lb to a 10 lb extinguisher.

I got a reply tonight from Paul Bergstrom:

"Hi Todd, sorry for the delay in responding - we recently had a Club Office transition and we're working on getting caught up here.

Yes, we sure to recognize and encourage folks to bring out the Canadian-built Pontiacs.  Here is a list of our Popular Vote Show Classes.

(I have copied our Deputy Chief Judge, Bernie Hackett, to see if he has any other comments for you.   Bernie, do we always mix in the Canadian-Built cars with the U.S.-built?  Any notes for points-judged Canadian Pontiacs?)

Do I see right that all Canadian Pontiacs go in one class? I would have thought that would have changed by now. Years ago they just put the Beaumonts with the Lemans. Not sure what they do with Acadians. Mine was not original so it ended up in semi modified anyway.

What class does a highly modified 66 Acadian fit into?

BBB 1965-2006 MODIFIED I would suspect. I think semi modified was something like 3 changes from stock, such as wheels, engine, trans etc.

The POCI show is the same weekend as the CanAm Chevelle/Beaumont Club show in Grand Island, NY. I still have not decided which one I am going to attend.

Maybe you could start a new thread asking who is going. I see that you only have one yes reply and my undecided reply so far. I would really like to know how many are going as well as how many are driving their cars.

I'm still trying to get a freakin passport. I went on my day off last Monday, waited in line, got up to the "wicket" and the girl said my birth certificate was "too tattered to make out the first letter of" my last name. So, even though I had a wallet full of ID including lots of photo id, she sent me away with the website address to apply for a new birth certificate. What a hassle! If I ever get it, I'll think about going.

You don't need a passport unless you are flying. If you drive across you can still go with DL and BC. Or are you planning on flying down with the car in the corporate jet?

I was planning on it but maybe it wouldn't look good with me complaining about poor Poncho item sales! I thought in 2009 you had to have a passport even when driving over the border?

I checked the internet and the date that it says now is June 2009, but that may change again.
My wife and I went to the passport office on Nov 14 and the passports arrived yesterday in the mail (10 days). We both had them before so it went quickly. I can tell you that it is much easier to get a passport now that it was 10 years ago when I got my first one.

That date has been changed at least 3 times now. I wonder if it will ever actually happen.

The passport certainly does make it easier to cross than it used to be when we used BC or DL for our ID though.

If I get a minute I'll contact Rick Gonzer - POCI Chief Judge and inquire as to which classes Acadians and Beaumonts would be placed.  This only applies to vehicles entered into "Popular Vote".  Class designation doesn't really apply for "Pointes Judged" vehicles.
