Yup driving down the road I noticed the odo start to click and now I'm stuck on 98700...pulled the speedo cable off and gave a squirt. nothing! I've been taking along look at pulling it out to get a better look at it. if anyone out there has some trick to get her going again let me know.
Yes the speedo still works the needle now jumps. The cable is good and turns well and smooth, and is good at the trans too. For sure its at the cluster because at slow speed you can here it click over the tabs inside but not turning over to a full 700 miles.
I hope so. Ive been under there a few times. the only thing that would give me some trouble would be the tube that is bolted much like a brake line to the temp guage.
and after working on the car for awhile. I have to say I miss a fuse box. In line fuses are a pain. Tomorrow I'm working on some fresh brake lines. I'll give the cluster another look.
Well today I finnally got the cluster out and had a good look. The third wheel on the odo was stuck and with a little pull it came loose and moved easily. I'm still not so sure why it jambed? I put a little amount of greese on the gears then spun the speedo cable hookup and now she spins freely. All was very clean and no visable damage. I don't want to pull out the cluster too often, its a bit of a pitta to get out. Once out it was kinda cool seeing a manufature stamp on the insie of the cluster FEB22 1954.
Back in June we were looking at an original warranty card for a 49 Pontiac and I believe it said lifetime oil changes were free. The dealer rep who was there said they would be pleased to honour the warranty.

That would be cool I would like to see the look on the service reps face when you walk in with that and ask for a free change
The thing was that with the odo not working it made the speedo jump all over. Had to fix. I have afew other things to get working yet but hose should not be too bad. One stuck wheel cylinder, fuel guage, just a bad wire. had to change out one section of hard brake line, leaking. And getting the turn signals to work. Bad flasher connector. Other than that everything else is good to go.
