Anyone put a 502 in a 66 or 67 Beaumont/Chevelle

Does anyone have experience with this swap?

The questions I have concern a crate 502 from GM and any problems associated with exhaust, clutch linkage for a 4 speed, oil pan clearance, stock big block pulleys and brackets, clutch ball hole not drilled on the 502 block and any others you may think of.

Just trying to help someone out who has very little time to get on the computer to ask these questions.

Thanks.

Our member 'muttly' has a 502 in his 68/69 Beaumont, his wife is a licensed mechanic and she did a lot of the work with him. He doesn't seem to sign on very much these days. It is a very nice and neat looking instalation.

Will he be able to help with a 66/67? Is there a way to PM him?

Don't have a answer for your question, but I would be interested in the old motor if it is a 396 and trans if it is a power glide
Thanks BOB

I see this question is almost a year old, but I'll offer some info anyway for anyone else thinking of this. wink

No provision was made for a mechanical fuel pump, nor a clutch rod pivot in the 502 block casting.

An electric fuel pump will be required and a manufactured clutch rod pivot bracket too.

Thanks guys, project is on the back burner for now. However, I guess we have to look into making a pivot for the clutch bar.

Sorry, the original 396 vanished very early on, likely in the 70's from what is known about the car.

I'll save you the work. These are available. You can use either hole for the pivot ball.......

Two problems cropped up for me. I had to modify the scattershield to get the mounting holes to line up. The holes don't show in the photo, but they're 90degrees to the bracket at the opposite end to the ball holes. It uses two of the bell-housing-to-block-bolts for mounting. Also, I had to cut 1/2" out of the length of the shaft to get it over the ball.

Your application may vary. wink

So at the wide end the bracket turns 90 degrees and has bolt holes for the bellhousing bolts?

I doubt a factory bellhousing would require any modifications. The Lakewood scattershield wouldn't let the bracket get all the way lined up over the mounting holes, but a little massaging of the scattershield took care of that.

Fit it while the engine/scattershield/tranny combo are together on the floor. A little action with a grinder and you're golden.
biggrin

I had to do mine with it all in the car as I hadn't found the bracket until it was all assembled. I was just about to fabricate one when I found this one made from aluminum.

A friend of mine was just dropping a 502 into his 67 chevelle a couple weeks ago when I stopped in. He could not get it in because the oil pan was too big. He called G.M. while I was there and they sold him a different oil pan, but would not take the big one back. The new one was about $135.00 if I remember correctly. I have not been back but I know the motor is in. If you don't get the answers you need let me know and I can ask questions for you. Or put you in touch with him.

Thank you guys. When the time comes I will be peeking back at this thread.

Right now priority is a 327 in an Acadian, and it's not even mine!
