Legendary Motor Car?

Has anyone visited their shop? Is it worth a trip to check out the cars? I'm in toronto for the week, hanging out on Queen St. at an internet cafe right now on my way back to the hotel. I was thinking of heading there on Thursday or Friday for a ride...

Like they said. It's well worth the trip. You can tour the shop for a small donation. I took a pile of photos when I was there. You do get a little numb after a while.

I don't think the Motorsports Hall of Fame is open through the week. I went there last spring and had a look at the cars. It didn't take too long to see all the roped off cars.

Imagine Peter doing the road test thing with the Laurentian on Dream Car Garage... You know how he talks on there:
"It's got the 427, it's got the green interior, the endura nose. It's got the four wheel drum brakes. They're only gonna stop ya once"

or Tom Hnatiw:

"Do you NEED a lemon-lime Laurentian? No. Do you WANT a lemon-lime Laurentian? Yes" biggrin

Definitely worth a visit. I usually go there every time I'm in Toronto when time permits. Most of their cars are high quality restorations and certainly costly, but there there are some that are more competitively priced.  I'll be interested to see if the market generally becomes softer as a result of the recession. One car I love is the gold 70 LS6 Chevelle that I think they still have. It is a superb car, and was priced at $99K when I saw it in June.

Peter and Dave are both very down to earth car guys that will talk cars or business with you, the memoriblia is nice, theres always a good selection of cars-some may not be as cosmetically up to snuff as you may want to see, that is sometimes due to trying to price more afforadable cars and still make a profit, impressive building-hopefully you can get a tour, there will be a lot of cars there for storage this time of year-one note I was always very surprised at how uninformed the attendants were.

worth the trip

Agree with you on that last point. The person I talked to did not seem to know much about the cars. Also, there was one in stock that I was interested in. I asked to look at it more closely but was told it was sold, and on that basis was discouraged by the attendant from looking it over the way I wanted to.
Turns out the car was still for sale for about two months afterwards, and it eventually turned up for sale by another Toronto dealer at less than Legendary's ask at the time.
I'm not sure why that happened - maybe not the norm, as they certainly have a great operation there and lots of high quality cars. And it's neat that they do welcome visitors in return for a small donation to charity.

Call ahead and say that you are a potential customer and want to see a tour of the restoration facilities, you'll see them working on the cars that will be featured on next year's shows. wink.gif

Details, we need details, inquiring minds want to know. I have heard some stories as well, that their research efforts in order to get the car "correct" are not always up to snuff.

The true mark of a restoration shop (especially a high end one that charges the big bucks) is how well their efforts do in a nationally judged show. I know Scott Tiemann from Supercar Specialties in Michigan and virtually every Pontiac he has ever restored has gone on to win Best of Show at the GTO nationals or POCI. Has anyone ever heard of how the LMC cars have done at big shows?

He sent his RS SS camaro there. Supplied all the new parts to get the headlight doors working electrically, sent a complete flowmaster exhaust system there to be installed, and wanted them to tune the car (set up the carb etc.). Ended up costing him almost two times what they quoted, they had all kinds of reasons but my point is who the F is quoting prices there?

Anyone who has been in the business as long as they have and has the "expertise" they purport to have should not have their quotes out by 50%. I have never heard of anyone coming out of there without having spent an arm and a leg. Someone had to pay for that nice shop - and have you seen Peter's house out back? jawdrop.gif

When I wa last assistant manager of a bodyshop (15 years ago) door rate was $48/hour material was 40 % of labour.

1000 hours = $48,000 at that time plus $19,200 in material

a guy around the corner from me spend $82,000 on a 67 Tiger @ QRS I heard the engine hasn't been rebuilt !

Most guys who build a car themselves can't come out ahead-how could anyone dream of coming out ahead if they pay for everything ! I've had customers belly ache about their $10,000 body job-I'm usually amazed theres a shop out there that would do quarters/doors/fenders/floors for that money.

Yes I've heard bad stuff about these guys, come to think of it I do know of any business I haven't heard bad stuff about.

billing double (100% more) is clearly not right but theres always two sides-I had a guy tell me he was quoted $9000 for a body job and it cost him $13,000 but they also painted the dash/firewall/inner fenders/rad support/lifted the body to sandblast throughout/changed bushings etc... sounded like the extra $4000 was well covered to me.

Ken

bottom line try not to pay for a showroom !

I did all the body on my 69 and spent years gathering NOS parts to do it. Chris that owns the shop where I had my car painted said it would have been over $20,000 if he would have done all the work and supplied what parts he could find. That's just the body and paint, nothing more.

wow !  It was obviously worth it,  but it is pricey, to get them done   I fiqured, my "little" Pontiac was worth 10g, just because, it needed  nothing repaired on the body..   The fact that the drive line, and interior were done, was a bonus..biggrin
