Possible the best and most unselfsish gift anyone could give is to sign your donor card or make your wishes know to your immediate family My brother in law under went a double lung transplant in July 2007. Currently he is in hospital fighting a bout of rejection and infection. Too see the determination and fight this man has to stay alive is awe inspiring. He has two children 17 and 12 and his goal is to stay alive until both kids get married. His donor lungs came from western Canada and due to regulations the only thing my sister was able to due was send a personal thank you letter to the family of the donor. It is their choice if they would like to remain in contact with her.
I would like that family to know their loved one may have passed on but his lungs have kept my brother in law alive this far and we are so thankful for their difficult but heartfelt donation.
Best of luck to him and we'll keep him in our prayers. Its an unselfish act that could benefit so many. Trust me people, your not going to miss the parts when you're gone. Both the wife and I are organ donors. I just ask that they wait until we've died before they "raid the cupboards". Sign your cards people, don't wait until you or a loved one is in need.

Funny, I just had this talk with both our children last night. Our 14 year old son said he would have no problem donating but not for research. I explained to him that even though it seems gross and seems to be a waste, his organ may be the one that is used for research that helps find a cure for something. And, if they are using his organ, obviously he is not needing it any more!

my wife just got contacted last week by a university in Winnipeg, reference her uncle who passed away 3 years ago. he had will his body to research and my wife had requested notification when ever they were to intern him because she was his closes living relatives. her uncle was a doctor. i guess she will be going to Winnipeg in the new year.
They said there was "nothing" they needed. I think they implied, that everyting was wore out
