The 0222 should be Feb 22. Does that make sense with his build date?

Car was built in March, his actual number is over a month earlier than the 0222. My understanding was more than one of these cars could have the same engine number.

ZG was a engine code for the 327 nova block as was ZH (going from the top of my head here...). I believe they were 275hp models. The oil filter recess on that block isn't correct for a nova V8 block.

Dan, I believe that is true about the number. All that does is tell the date the machine work is cone. They certainly will have machined more than one block per day. I am going to check some other ones that I have but I think the Canadian ones only have that 1 set of numbers on the pad as you say.

Hmm, I just thought of it. His casting date is April. Kind of hard to machine a block in Feb that was cast in April. Things that make you go hmmmmmmm......

*************IGNORE THIS WRITING ABOVE!!!!******************

Ignore the above jibberish. I mixed up Dan's block info and Mighty Mouse's info.

Ahhhh...finally something on the Canadian Suffixes!.

I posted a thread asking if anyone wanted to share these last spring but nobody responded..
There's an old book I have w/ some listed so if anyone wants to dig up any they have too, lets lay them out on a sticky thread..

Strange timing on this as about 25 years ago I shared the Cdn. #'s I had w/ Fran Preve who was the Tonawanda Plant Manager...sadly Fran just passed away on Christmas day..

That is sad. I have read some of his stuff. Seems like he was a real genuine car guy and really knew his stuff.

A sticky for this would be a good idea.

Pete

Would you be able to post some of these suffix code numbers?

Ron

I made an inquiry to GM Canada.  The suffix code on this engine is Canadian.  The first two digits indicate passenger car - manual transmission.

I pulled the valve covers off the engine this afternoon.

So this sparks yet another question or two.

*Since the first two numbers "21 6" on the one-line of suffix code represents a passenger car with a manual transmission and the next number represents 1966...as reported by an inquiry to GM Canada this week...and since it was further indicated that there are no other "identifiers" on the suffix code (block pad) that could match this up to a "specific" model of car.....

....then which car could it have been originally installed in from the factory? Would this mean any 1966 passenger car would be correct?

*Block Casting Number sources show the casting number of 3858180 representing "passenger car and chevelle" for "1966", for  "American" Data.

Are there any members that have the same block casting number for the early 1966 model year... and if you do...what "Canadian" car model has it been used in? ..Beaumont?....Acadian?

Heads on this block are 462's and there is no way of knowing if they are the 2.02 heads or the 1.94 heads until they are removed from the block. The heads are original to this block..which passenger car would have these heads installed from the factory (Oshawa as per GM inquiry).  The intake on this engine is not original.

Your help is very much appreciated!

Ron

Well, we can be "fairly" sure this engine is Chevelle/Beaumont or full size since the casting does not make sense for a Nova/Acadian. Both of those possibilities could have had those heads. That certainly is a mystery.

I'll take it. Wrap it up and ship it to Manitoba please!

Seriously, yes, that is the view you need to see if a block is Nova or otherwise.

I am going to check if I have any Canadian block code listings. Not sure I do though.

Hi people, I was under the understanding that all L79 engines were imported from the USA in 66. I know there is no made in Canada cast into the heads on the L79 in the Acadian.

Hmm, that is neat. I never would have guessed that. Do you think it has to do with the heads being 2.02" instead of 1.94"?

We know those same castings were used for 1.94" on other 327 applications and those ones say Made in Canada on them. Interesting.........
