GTE is what my notes say. Now, for bonus points, what was the difference between the early ones (first 358 made) and the later ones (244 made).

It was a mechanical difference

What engine in the musclecar years had the highest torque rating?

I'll go with the 1970 Cadillac Eldorado:
500 Cubic Inch V-8 (400 Horsepower at 4400 rpm)
Bore and stroke: 4.30 x 4.304 Inches
Compression ratio: 10.0:1
Torque: 550 ft. lbs. at 3000 rpm
Carburetor: Rochester Model 4MV Quadrajet (Special for Eldorado)
Exhaust System: Dual Exhaust to Muffler, One Outlet Pipe from Muffler

Your answer is probably the 1970 GS Stage I at 510.

I said Caddy but I believe Stage 1 is correct, is it not?

No, this is a tricky one. I believe the air cooled units all had a rear pump and thus you could push start a car with an automatic.

Ok Carl, the right answer to the question you posed is the 1970 Cadillac at 550 ft. lbs. because that engine clearly was produced during the musclecar era. Generally not considered a muscle car I think in retrospect the 70 Eldorado would qualify BUT, IF the question you really wanted to ask is what muscle car had the highest torque rating? Then I suppose it is the GS Stage I at 510 ft. lbs. That's why I gave both in my answer.
