It used to be just before the finish line. But they have since changed it to a 1000 feet.

69 and 70 Shelby's They have the exhaust routed like the Mustangs except until just before the bumper.

What had to be moved to make this happen?

XR7-G?

GTE is what my notes say. Now, for bonus points, what was the difference between the early ones (first 358 made) and the later ones (244 made).

It was a mechanical difference

Another piece of trivia was what car inspired this and the California one?

There was a TWISTER

That could be, but I am looking for a state-specific one and I believe someone has the right answer in this thread. Haven't sorted all the answers yet though!

Yes, you are right. When it was a 1/4 it was measured the last 66 feet before the end of the quarter plus the first 66 feet after the 1/4.

Yes. Supposedly the public demand reinstated it.

Yes, someone did answer this back in this thread. And the state was Colorado. I have no idea why they did this.

This is from the nhra website:

spacer.gif"Two separate performances are monitored for each run: elapsed time and speed. Upon leaving the staging beams, each vehicle activates an elapsed-time clock, which is stopped when that vehicle reaches the finish line. The start-to-finish clocking is the vehicle's elapsed time (e.t.), which serves to measure performance. Speed is measured in a 66-foot "speed trap" that ends at the finish line. Each lane is timed independently."

I had the wrong answer Chris. Sorry. I copied that from a book too! I would think NHRA would likely have the correct answer that you printed!

Is there any chance that it was different 25 years ago? I remember guys telling me to stay in the throttle a bit past the line for best results.

If it is what I think you are referring to, it is the issue of whether the stripes were ever painted on top of the spoiler, however everything I have ever read indicates that no cars ever came from the factory with the stripes painted on top, so that any car that does have them is not an "official" factory version.  Also, convertibles and cars with vinyl roofs never came with stripes on the roof, unlike the one colour cars.wink  One other variation, the orginial preproduction car the press tested was actually silver with red stripes so you could say that is another variation as well.
