Was it the Chevy Beretta? I think there was an Italian gun with the same name?

Yes, I posted that answer 13 hours and 47 minutes ago. Can I suggest you post one or two at a time then check back so we don't get too far ahead of ourselves? wink I think you were too excited to hit 4000 post and rolled off about 50 questions at one time!

Naw, I posted a bunch and my fingers got tired!  Never did get to 4000 till later that night. I came in second in that race!!!

Next time I post a bunch, I will not do it all in the same thread either. That was the biggest mistake. Should have done each one separate.

I thought I had caught up on all the answers. I was pretty careful going back throught the thread and checking each one. I guessed I missed one. In the words of Steve Martin, "Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse ME!"

GM invented it, they were to slow getting it to production trucks, so Ford did com out with it first to the public. It can not be called a door, as mandated by DMVS, I believe because its smaller width doesnt allow for as easy exit in emergencies, so no inside or outside door handles, thus an "access panel"

Dana 60

No, I have a different answer again. I am no Dodge expert but I think I have this one correct.

I'm looking at a 1970 Rapid Transit System sales brochure and it lists for the Hemi "Extra heavy duty Dana built 9 3/4" dia. ring gear. Granted this is a Plymouth brochure.

Tonight I was watching the replay of last year's Barrett-Jackson and they had a segment where one of their experts was describing all of the muscle rear ends and he said that all of the hemi and 440 cars came with the 9 3/4" Dana rear end.  So if I saw it on B-J, it must be true right? rofl.gif

You shouldn't rely on B-J alone. Now the fact that B-J and BR (Big Ray) say it's so, that 's when you know you can rely on it !

Well, for sure then we know it's wrong......!!!

I will see if I can find it. I read that a 426 automatic had the 8 3/4" as standard equipment, Dana 60 optional AND that a 426 4 speed had a Dana 60 as standard equipment.

Well, the standard transmission on the Hemi is listed as High Upshift Torqueflite automatic with the 9 3/4" Dana as the rear axle. Again, just a sales brochure from 1970.

Wait a minute, maybe I won't give up yet!

I just read this---

"Hemi-powered Coronets added an extra leaf to the rear springs. Those equipped with Chryslers A-833 four-speed manual gearbox got a Dana rear end with the biggest ring gear on the market at 93/4 inches. A variety of axle combinations was available, but for street/strip use, the TorqueFlite automatic with the 3.54:1 Dana Sure-Grip was a good compromise."

"
No effort was spared in preparing these cars for battle. Each was fitted with either of two versions of the factory Drag Package. The Super Stock/B version used the four speed manual transmission, Hurst shifter and linkage, heavy duty gears and clutch, and an explosion-proof clutch housing. The Dana 60 rear end was equipped with a 4.88 Sure-Grip differential. The second version, designated for SS/BA, was equipped with a specially-built A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission using a 2,300 to 2,500 stall speed torque converter. The automatic cushioned the Hemis torque enough that a lighter 8 3/4 inch 4.86:1 Sure-Grip could be used."

The sales brochure shows the 3.54 ratio as Not Available with the Hemi  automatic, that is the equivilent to a posi so wouldn't affect the ring gear size would it?

Ok, I stick with my original statement------

"
From 1970 through 1971, the 426 Hemi Cudas were available with a Spicer Dana 60 rear end, and with a shaker hood. With these models, the engines were de-tuned and adjusted slightly to allow for low lead fuel and a dropped compression ratio, but still performed outstandingly. The Dana 60 rear end was offered standard with Manual transmissions, and as an option with automatic transmissions. In 1971 the amount of Hemi Cuda 426 vehicles produced were 108 hardtops, 60 with four speeds, and 48 with the Torque-Flight, and 9 convertibles, 7 domestics sold, and 2 four-speed, 5 automatic, and 2 sold that were then shipped to Europe."

Well it would seem to be a year specific thing, my info is from 1970 and by the sounds of it yours is earlier, probably changed after they blew up too many 8 3/4 ring gears!!

I'm sorry, I don't know my Dodge products well enough to know what diffs offered what ratios. I thought that 3.54 was a Dana 60 ratio only but I'm not sure.

Our service manager just put an 8 3/4 in his 68 Dart, and I thought it was 3.55 but I'm just not positive.

I don't know what that proves Carl.  The Dana 60 was available with 3.54 gears.  I think all the author is saying is that the 3.54 ratio was a good compromise for the street, as opposed to the 4.10 ratio.  He is not saying that the 3.54 ratio was not available in a Dana.

The 3.54 is a Dana ratio, available with the 4 speed. 340 & 383 got the 8 3/4 with 3.55 available. Ther eis quite a matrix chart for all the engines and ratios. standard ratio in most cases was 3.23, then 3.54, 3.55, 3.91 and 4.10 as optionals depending on application.

The author sounds like he is referring to specially prepared race cars, I thought your original question referred to what was available in regular street hemi cars.  I didn't think your local friendly Dodge/Plymouth dealer could sell you a car factory equipped with a 2,300-2,500 stall and a 4.86 rear end for street use!wink
