No effort was spared in preparing these cars for battle. Each was fitted with either of two versions of the factory Drag Package. The Super Stock/B version used the four speed manual transmission, Hurst shifter and linkage, heavy duty gears and clutch, and an explosion-proof clutch housing. The Dana 60 rear end was equipped with a 4.88 Sure-Grip differential. The second version, designated for SS/BA, was equipped with a specially-built A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission using a 2,300 to 2,500 stall speed torque converter. The automatic cushioned the Hemis torque enough that a lighter 8 3/4 inch 4.86:1 Sure-Grip could be used."

The author sounds like he is referring to specially prepared race cars, I thought your original question referred to what was available in regular street hemi cars.  I didn't think your local friendly Dodge/Plymouth dealer could sell you a car factory equipped with a 2,300-2,500 stall and a 4.86 rear end for street use!wink

HRM: How about the Dana 60 rear axle, were you involved in its inclusion in the Street Hemi package on manual transmission models?

Only in gear ratio development. The Dana was a good but very expensive axle. Obviously we didn't want to put extra money into the car if it didn't need it. When it came to durability testing that might have revealed the need for the Dana or added body structure bracing, there was an awful lot of stuff going on. If it isn't in you area, you may not know about it. It is not necessarily secret, you just never think to ask.

Lets put it this way, I noticed and replied, it's not true according to the 1970 Rapid Transit Chrysler Corporation publication I am quoting from.

Carl, how about putting up just trivia questions rather than these technically obscure and ambiguious queries that result in debate and no real resolution.  yawn.gif

I don't know what to say. I was not looking to create divisions within the ranks. It was supposed to be fun. I'm not sure how to post a question that won't have more than one correct answer.

You guys with teenagers know what I mean!

Carl, is there any way to summarize the unanswered questions up to now so we can get caught up. Once we sort out those we look forward to more mind teasers! You said you have 275...right?

Actually it is a GM, that design is unmistakenly GM.

It's an Opel Diplomat 5.4 V8 - it's a 327, 230 HP Chevrolet engine under that hood.

Positive. Opel is GM of Germany in case anyone did not know that, Vauxhall is GM in Britain. Opel and Vauxhall had similar lineups over the years. Dare I say the Cadillac Catera is an Opel!
