I think we'll also break the monthly hits number this month as well.

It must be the cold. I do know our house broke the hydro bill record as well. $468!!! no

Ouuuuuuuch!!!  I think the most we've ever had is $320.   1456 square feet plus 28x28 heated garage to work in.

I feel better already.

$468.00 ! Is that for one month? Holy cr#p! We are paying 12 equal payments of $135.00 for a
%100 electric 3000 sq. ft. house with a suite in it. Do you have a gas bill on top of that?

Oh yes, it was quite a shock. Over $100 more than last month.  We heat the house with natural gas however the granny flat we built 2 years ago is primarily electric. You know how cold seniors get and it's been colder than normal this year. The t-stat reads 80 in there and they still run one of those power robbing portable heaters at night. They agreed to help out with the bill as my budget wasn't prepared for that! My gas bill is $195 on the budget. Needless to say there isn't any play money left over for the car!
The house is 120 years old. We've been doing a lot of draft sealing and insulating. The furnace is about 10 years old and is only a mid efficency unit. When the time comes I'll go high efficiency. The government grants for making a home more efficient won't really work for me as I don't have the 4 or 5 grand to shell out in order to get $1200 back.

Everyone I know in the HVAC business says stay away from high efficiency units - they aren't worth the money and you will never recover the extra cost, especially with a leaky house!

Thats huge I think something has got to be wrong Todd you need to get the wirring checked out in you house,My shop hydro was only $165 and the gas was only $265 I thought that was really good for a shop this size. My house even with the hot tub is still less than your house.

Our hydro bill came in less than $100 for the month. Pleasant surprise with having Christmas lights on last month, but we don't have many and they don't run long in the evening anyway. You'll freak when i tell you what i have our heat set at! Let's just say it's a good thing we have a heavy duvet on at night. In the spring i need to seal off some spots, side door you can feel the cold air at the door handle. I also think we'll have to get our windows in the front of the house done sometime, or i'll try to seal them a bit first.

I may call good ol Erie Thames Power and have them check to make sure the meter is ok. I was at Home Depot looking for one of those devices you hook into your service to determine how much power you are using. No dice finding one there. The "expert" in the electrical department looked at me like I was from outer space when I asked for one. I don't really want to buy one online. I do know we have a lot of phantom loads here. The entertainment unit now gets completely shut down at night. You have to remember the granny flat is really a self contained apartment so it's almost like two households.  I did purchase a digital thermostat for their place instead of the cheap one that was installed originally. Well, poor Connie is pulling her hair out now since even though her mom feels warm, she thinks there is something wrong with it because the thermostat at the other end of the room says 25c but the thermometer she HAS to have at her chair (which is near the door) says 24..disbelief
I keep my mouth shut and stay out of it...

Todd you could always put a meter on granny's place and let her pay her own. Hydro will not give you two meters but you can have a electrician put one in then you will know how many KW she uses . When people have to pay there own hydro they tend to watch things a little more
