Hillar, I find it ridiculous that people put more faith in a print out off the internet like CarFax instead of checking the car over themselves. Even if they are not car savvy, anyone can tell what overspray is. No one wants to be responsible for making a decision anymore without someone to blame!!!

Earl, agreed, but sometimes we forget that most people are not mechanically inclined like we are and should be able to rely on a so called professional service that professes to accurately report on such things.  That smiling jackass from Carfax, I just wanted to kick him in the teeth.  They are totalling taking people's money under false pretenses.furious

but they are telling people they do know.  If at the end even they are saying you should always have the car checked out by a mechanic anyway, what is the point of buying what they are selling?  I would go further, when they are making a positive statement that a car has never been in accident when they are not in a position to say that with certainty, that is just out right fraud.  What they should be saying is, well, as far as we know, and we certainly can't guarantee anything with respect to the info we may or may have not received because everything that happened to the car may or may have not been reported to us....well, who would pay anything for that?

Not sure about other provinces but in Manitoba it's a free call to our government insurance office and they will tell you if the car you are looking at has been totalled. (post 1995 that is) They don't have write offs recorded previously.

I have told the story before here of the 87 Grand National write off I fixed. In a nutshell the insurance company refused to give the car a branded title (and I requested they list it as a writeoff on the title to deter scammers, they refused).

When we sold it we told the dealer I traded it to that it was a written off repair. It only took him a couple of months to run it through a Dealer auction as a "clean" car, exactly as I predicted would happen. Grrrrrrrrr!!! At least he got caught, but somewhere along the way someone will get away with it on this low mile Grand National.

Basically if a used car lot will not let you take a car to your mechanic, run away from it!

"Take it to a mechanic" for the not so car savvy will beat a CarFax opinion every time. It still gives the sheep something to bleat about. "That it's not my fault, my mechanic missed something, so I'll sue him too"!
As long as there is somebody to blame if it doesn't work out as utopian as envisioned. Even my own daughter has some of this attitude. I hope she picked it up from co-workers and not her mother!
