I'm not sure it'll fit a '69 Poncho, Todd. rofl.gif

Hey Ray,

Apparently, most of the high-rollers at Barrett Jackson do.

It's a joke that got started by the NCRS type crowd. The 1st person who asked me that question was a member of the Corvette Restorers, back in 1979. I had a 65 convertible for sale that I had changed the engine in that summer due to the original 327 being seized. I replaced it with a 350/300 hp and I sold the original engine to a drag racer who used it to build up and put in a gasser. The NCRS guy came to look at my 65 and proceeded to tell me it wasn't worth anything because it didn't have the original engine, but he would relieve me of my burden for $4000, when it was  priced at $6500. That's what started my contempt of those a**holes ever since.

Yes, Earl-this is always an interesting topic-I like yourself have sold many of my cars over the years-ever notice the high or at least higher end buyers don't check numbers-they believe you and look at quality. I had a 68SD396 with a CE block evryone would walk away because it wasn't #'s matching yet it was a 51,000 mile car with a great body-not to mention the previous four owner's all advertised it as #'s matching !

I sold my 65 corvette coupe to a guy a 5 years ago-evrything was correct alt/starter/carb etc.. he never looked at a thing.

customer's often ask about non matching numbers-I say if your not paying for matchinf numbers don't worry about it-they all go up poportionly-actually theres more market in the lower end just because everyone is somewhat a price buyer.

anyway what do numbers mean ? it means someone drove around all the swap meets to find thecorrect dated parts or you just bought a time capsule that nobody broke anything on-I've often found that the wrong motor cars were the toys that were stored out of the weather and the matching ones were the ones not toyed with and driven through the winter-I'd much rather have a good body than the matching engine.

this old SS427 is just fine with the 454 in it.

Astro Jet and I went to see the car this afternoon. Vendor is a super nice guy. What we didn't expect was the 72 Boat-tail, 61 Laurentian, 57 Chevy and that he had. He had 2 Gemlin X's in another garage too. Hillar has pics of the Pontiac to post later. It was a fun outing.

The best part of the adventure was the laneways in that old part of Toronto built in the early 1900's. We took the Fleetwood, and I was thinking it could be trouble. We had about a foot clearance going in on the sides and while we navigated the meandering laneways to see the cars alright there was one turn on the way out that the big Caddy was never making......... so we backed out until we found enough space to 3 point turn it in a vacant yard! biggrin

What did the vendor mean when he said the Impala needs an interior? What color is it and how bad?

Well Ray's camera died before we got there and mine died soon after although I did manage to get some pics of the 61 Laurentian.  4 door with the batwing roof.  Rubber floor mats, front seat has been re-upholstered and rear seat is original with some big rips in them that previous owner had tried to sew together. It's painted dark green now with a medium green interior.  Overall looked fairly solid.  It's got that huge trunk with the well in the middle, perfect for acting as a cooler.wink  Mighty 261/powerglide combo.  Rear bumper had some chrome paint along the bottom and one of the back-up lights was missing.  Said he had to get at least $3,500 for it.

The 69 is driver quality. It needs a full interior - seat covers, door panels (white) and carpet (black).  A lot of the seals around the side windows were missing.  Dash looked good but steering wheel had a number of cracks in it.  Dash is cut for an aftermarket stereo and some accessory gauges mounted underneath.  Some bubling in the rear quarters by the bumpers.  Both bumpers will need to be rechromed.  Fender flash/marker light bezels need to be replated/replaced. Odometer was just rolling over 23,000.  It looks like some work has been done to the trunk floor but it has been covered up by some primer.  Owner said it was rust preventative paint as there was a lot surface rust in the trunk.  Car has had at least one repaint and they must have sprayed the entire trunk as well as there wasn't a spot of speckle paint left.  Owner didn't start it for us so we didn't hear it run.

The 61 Laurentian was more interesting to me. An Edmonton car originally. He told us it purrs like a kitten. It kind of looks like a unmarked police car from that era. Hillar mentions back up lights, it was actually missing one of the back up light block off plates since backup lights were optional back then. It was a cool old survivor. All the trim was intact on this one too.

The Impala didn't do much for me, especially after reading about the earlier SS427 cars as posted and remember it is being sold engineless. So on top of all the interior and cosmetic pieces needed you would need a big block too. If it was me and I found a bag of money I'd replace the top as well, it was ok but was sagging. So it's $9500 plus all those other things, another $6000 ? I'd rate it as a 6 to 7 out of 10. If it didn't have the SS emblems on it I doubt we would have gone down to see it.

Well, we yakked about the '69 SS427, and I droned on and on about the '67. I guess we'd better not leave out the '68. wink

From the January 2007 issue....

The headline writer called it an Impala, 'cause, hey, it looks like one doesn't it? biggrin

So, now that you've decided to freshen up your '68 Chevrolet SS427 by replacing the emblems with new ones, you're thrilled to find a trunk enblem on eBay.

You're so happy, you don't mind paying US$89.00. But, maybe you should do a little research. wink

Same part number (7752254) for US$49.95 - http://www.1955-75chevyautoparts.com/catalogpdfs/B3%2011%20emblems.pdf

This entire thread is so good it deserves a second look if you like late '60s Chevy B bodies.

Now, Can somebody do a similar thread for '65-66 Pontiac Custom Sports and '67-70 2+2's, especially big blocks.

Thanks!  smile

Great stories guys. My friend had a pair of these about 30 years ago, a butternut yellow ragtop and a butternut yellow hardtop, both 427 4speeds.
