283 350 HARMONIC BALANCER INTERCHANGE?

I`LL BE PUTTING A HOT LITTLE 350 IN MY BEAUMONT AND TRYING TO KEEP IT STOCK LOOKING.I WOULD LIKE TO GO WITH THE SHORT WATER PUMP AND KEEP THE ALTERNATOR ON THE DRIVERS SIDE,NOW WHEN IT COME TO THE POWER STEERING THE BIG 8" BALANCER ON THE 350 WILL NOT CLEAR THE LOWER P/S BRACKET FROM THE 283,MY QUESTION IS CAN I USE THE 283 HARMONIC BALANCER AND PUT IT ON THE 350.THANKS

Sure can! Thay are all internally balanced with the exception of the 400 and 454. I did the same as you with my Rag in '96 when I installed an old style Targetmaster 350 converted to EFI and an EFI'ed Targetmaster 350 in my '67 Coupe in '97.

There is 3 and possibly even 4 different size balancers that all interchange on the small blocks (excluding 400 of course). You can't be Canadian Pontiac engines (Chevy) for interchangability!

I WANT TO DISGUISE a 350 to look like the factory 283 it`s nice to know i can use my 283 harmonic so the p/s brackets will fit but to keep the factory valve covers with no holes for the pcv.because the pcv on the 283 had a hole in the back of the block to vent the gases to the back of the carb. but with the 350 it has no hole in the back of the block because it vented the block from the hole in the valve cover (pcv) which started in 68`i here moroso sells a pcv groumet with a built in baffle but i would have to drill a hole in the intake or back of the block for it. or will there be enough air to vent the block from the oil filler tube up front? but i hear that is to take fresh air in now it`s needs a place to exit!!!

Is there any reason you can't use the filler tube like the L79 cars?

If you look at the write up of this month's feature car, third picture down, you will see the filler tube with PCV in it. That should work.

Yes, you are right. I thought about it some more. Still not the solution.

Hi I am putting 350 in 65 Beaumont my aftermarket steering bracket clears my 8" balancer.
Do you know if thickness of the 8" is different than the 283 balancer you changed yours with.
I don't know if I have the right water pump pulley and it doesn't look like alternator will align.
How did your swap work out?
