I HAVE A LINE ON A 10 BOLT POSI FOR MY BEAUMONT I MIGHT BUY. THE DIFFERENTIAL COVER IS OFF AND THE FLUID IS DRAINED.WHAT SHOULD I BE LOOKING AT TO MAKE SURE IT`S NOT WORN OUT,I HERE IF ONE PERSON HOLDS ONE AXLE AND ANOTHER PERSON TRYS TO TURN THE OTHER IT SHOULDN`T TURN OR VERY HARD TO TURN IT`S A GOOD POSI,IF IT`S EASY TO TURN THE POSI IS BLOWN.ANY TIPS??THANKS.
I believe that 'hard to turn' idea applies to the clutches needed replacing, so in someways it depends are you buying to bolt in or rebuild? I've only turned mine with the tires on, so the leverage makes is easier to break loose and turn... i've seen two varying suggestions that either 35 or 70 ft/lbs of force to turn...you could simulate that when you are looking or literally bring an acorn lug nut and a torque wrench and try it out... look for signs of oil leaking on the brakes etc. this could be a sign of worn out axle seals... i'd call a rear end shop and ask them the same question, maybe you'll get an interesting tip...
THANKS FOR YOUR RESONSE..AK 67SD.THATS WHAT I READ IN MY 64 ACADIAN MANUAL.I DID BUY THE REAR END DIDN`T HAVE A TORQUE WRENCH BUT WE DID TRY TO TURN BY HOLDING ONE SIDE AND PUT A PRY BAR ON THE OTHER SIDE AND NICE AND TIGHT.. SO FOR $180 COMPLETE REAR END AND A BONUS 336 GEARS.
that was going to be part of my response, that it depends on how much you are paying for it too... for that price, its a good deal even if needs to be rebuilt!!
