To import or not, that is the question

After dropping a huge amount on importing parts for my second-last project (almost nothing available in Canada), and going through a very difficult cross-border fiasco when importing my 24-foot enclosed trailer, I'd like to benefit from some CP experience.

Here, in Ontario, we have documentation which we refer to as ownerships. In many states, people talk about titles and registrations. Who can explain the difference.

If a U.S. car has no "Title", is there any point in considering it if you intend to licence the car in Canada?

I have bought 4 cars in the U.S. and brought them through. They all had titles. After Jan '09 you cannot bring in U.S.cars with salvage, flood or other than clear titles. A guy I met just had to dismantle a car he bought in Georgia and sell it in parts. He was turned back at the border with the car and took it to a friend's in Ohio and stripped it, brought the parts through and is selling them. Some states do not issue titles on older cars, so you can get a tile company like Broadway Titles to do one up. But it may not be able to cross the border still. Check out the Registar of Imported Vehicles for the latest set of rules. I've heard of people trying to challenge the rules, but unless you want to waste a lot of energy and money don't bother.

I have friends in several states. I guess I could have one of them take ownership (using a title company's services) and then import it from them with a current title.

You're probably right, though. It may be too much trouble.

Check out the RIV website for the latest. There is some deals right now, but the U.S. dollar, taxes and shipping cancel it out almost. But if it's a rust free Southie it's worth the hassle.

[quote from RIV website]
All vehicles (except buses) that are over 15 years or older by the date of manufacture are exempt from the Registrar of Imported Vehicles program.  You must be able to prove the age of the vehicle to a Customs officer.

====================================================

Since anything I'd be interested in will be much older than 15 years, I guess I'm exempt from RIV anyway.

There's still the matter of acceptable paperwork to satisfy the border crossing folks and registration with the Province of Ontario.

Have the registered Title holder fax a copy of the title to the border crossing 72 hrs. in advance to U.S. Customs and have all your necessary paperwork in order before you cross the bridge. Also, don't try this on a U.S. holiday weekend!

Geesh, Carl. You should remove that Ontario ownership. Way too much of your personal info is on there.

I never heard of that before. Is that for inside the RIV (15 years old or newer) or is that for ALL vehicles coming in?

My friend owns his original 62 Super Duty Catalina.

For some reason I thought Gay Pontiac was in Houston.

I have used Braodway titles before. $150 and you wait weeks or $300 fast tracked and 3 days. The only one I thought I would have a problem with was a 93 GMC Typhoon. The trucks were never sold in Canada and number of people have been turnned back. Got lucky and got it across. All the others were no problem with the proper paper work

Earl, can you update me/us on this?  I am real curious.

Thanks.

Hi Carl. A guy I know that has been bringing old Mopars back from the U.S. for a few years was turned back with one of his latest cars due to a Salvage title. The car was a '69 Dodge Coronet. He took it to Ohio at a friends place and stripped it down and brought back the parts. This guy has been doing this for a number of years and this is the new regulations as of Jan '09. I will get more info by tomorrow and post what he tells me.

I stand corrected. I was at the guy's place with the Mopar that was turned back. He had NO title, just a previously acceptable proper bill of sale. He had to cut the car up U.S. side and bring it back in parts. Sorry for the confusion on that Carl, I misunderstood him as I thought it had a Salvage title.

That would certainly make more sense.

I am still going to check around a bit just to make sure. I know someone who has imported about 1500 vehicles in his lifetime so he will certainly know for sure.

Are the Broadway Titles accepted by Canada Customs, and RIV ?  I have passed on a few cars because I didn't want a hassle at the bridge/customs/or RIV. It seem to be easy enough to find cars with clean, clear titles for not much more money, but every now and then a rare deal might pop up.
I did have RIV say no to a Flood title (post-Katrina) car I was looking at.

It was 3 years ago I came across with a Broadway title. The only problem I had was it was Presidents Day when I got to the Boarder So Vinnie, the guy on the US side was not there to clear the car from leaving the US.
